Xbox Live chief Larry Hryb has long been referred to by his moniker Major Nelson, and according to him Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has listened to users and “one of the most requested features” has become a reality. That request was for users to be able to download a game directly to their console without being anywhere near home or wherever it may be located. More specifically, users can now use either the Xbox SmartGlass app or visit the Xbox.com website to add content, or remotely purchase games and have their downloads begin immediately after the purchase is made.
Competition means updates
Given the competition with Sony Corp (ADR) (NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758)’s PlayStation 4, it’s important for both console manufacturers to continue to update their software and offer more and more to consumers who are still on the fence as to which to purchase. While the companies each released the newest iterations of their consoles nearly ten months ago, their are still people out their who are avid gamers, but whether for economic reasons or other reasons have yet to update their gaming consoles.
It’s for this reason that while the roll-out of the August update began last evening and should be completed by tomorrow, some users, specifically members of the Xbox Live preview program are already receiving the “September” update.
The August update changes the activity feed making it a one-column feed that allows for both posting and commenting. It also notifies you when others comment or share your posts. Posts of game clips and other items can be made either publicly or privately.
Microsoft Xbox One August and September updates
“Today (Sunday), we will begin rolling out the next Xbox One system update to fans around the world, which will include improved social features to make sharing your gaming experiences with friends better and easier,” wrote Major Nelson in a blog post. “These new features are a result of your invaluable feedback, including some of the most requested features seen on Xbox Feedback.”
In addition to remote downloading and a change to the social aspects of the Xbox One, The Blu-ray player now supports 3D Blu-ray and also notifies gamers when their controller’s battery is getting low.
The Xbox One September update promises to be even bigger with a new “Friends” section, a boot-to-TV option and an update to the SmartGlass app that now allows for remote downloading.
