Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) announced commercial launching of XMM 6255, the world’s smallest 3G standalone modem intended to create a huge impact on the Internet of Things (IoT).
According to the company, the XMM 6255 was created to provide a wireless solution for the upcoming billions of smart and connected devices. The 3G standalone modem is the tiniest because it only 300 square millimeter in size, which is perfect for different wearable devices such as smartwatches, networked sensors, security devices and industrial equipment.
Features of Intel’s XMM 6255
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) said the XMM 6255 3G standalone modem features a SMARTI UE2p transceiver, which is based on the new Intel Power Transceiver technology with transmit and receive functionality. The technology has a fully integrated power amplifier and power management.
The chipmaker explained that Intel Power Transceiver technology was designed to reduce the component requirement of XMM 6225, which helps manufacturers minimize their build of material costs.
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) emphasized that the technology also protects the radio from overheating, voltage peaks and damage under tough usage conditions, which is critical for safety monitors and others IoT devices.
In addition, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) said the XMM 6255 has a unique radio architecture, which allows the modem to perform well in challenging situations. The modem provides reliable communications in areas with low signal network coverage such as a parking garage and home basement.
The XMM 6255 offers great 3G connectivity to small-sized devices even if they have small volume antennas that do not meet the conventional mobile phone quality standards.
According to Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), the integration of the powerful amplifier and transceiver of the XM 6255 “simplifies the design and minimizes device development costs,” which allows developers to launch more products faster and in a more cost-effective manner.
In an interview with BBC, Sergis Mushell, research director at Gartner commented, “It’s not just about the size of it. What Intel is really doing is going after a significant stake on the Internet of Things market, where connectivity is most important.”
Availability
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) said the XM 6255 is available in the u-blox SARA-U2 module. The company is expecting to have additional partnerships over the coming months.
