Windows 9 Will Be Free For Windows 8.1 Users [REPORT]

Updated on

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will reportedly release Windows 9 in the second or third quarter of 2015. Notorious and quite reliable leaker WZOR has revealed that the second major update to Windows 8.1 will be available in August or September this year. It will be free for Windows 8.1 Update 1 users. WZOR claims that users running previous Windows versions will have the opportunity to buy Windows 8.1 Update 2 for an affordable price.

Microsoft tightens security to prevent Windows 9 leaks

WZOR said that Windows 9 will be released as a free update to users who have installed Windows 8.1 Update 2. Or they could get it at a substantial discount. Past reports from the same leaker claimed that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) would offer Windows 9 as a free download. Moreover, Windows 9 Enterprise would give users the ability to disable Metro interface.

The hacker group added that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is holding a major internal event between June 23-27 to discuss its Windows plans. Windows 8.1 Update 2 may get an RTM Escrow status at the event. The Redmond-based company has tightened security to prevent Windows 9 leaks. Employees willing to use the latest OS will get personal copies, so that the company can easily track down leakers.

Windows 9 release to make Windows 8 the shortest-lived OS from Microsoft

The release of Windows 9 would apparently make Windows 8 the shortest lived OS in Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s history. Reports from Neowin and leaked internal documents suggest that Windows 9 will be the central part of Microsoft’s new strategy. It will have OneDrive, changes to Metro UI, Cortana, improved Windows activation and system protection with Windows Defender.

A big challenge for Windows 9 upon release could be Windows 7, which has now become the “new Windows XP.” Users who think Windows 7 is ‘good enough’ are unlikely to voluntarily upgrade unless they buy a new PC, says Leo Sun of The Motley Fool. Of course, they may upgrade if Windows 9 offers some wonderful user experience.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shares fell 0.75% to $41.67 at 1:06 PM EDT on Tuesday.
