Intel Corporation Hopes To Continue Progress In Mobile

Updated on

Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) lacks a 4G LTE solution, which might have forced Asus to join hands with Qualcomm as the SoC partner for the next generation of ZenFones. Despite the loss, company’s Asia Pacific and Japan director of product marketing and business operations, David McCloskey believes that the loss does not undermine the chip makers offerings in the mobile space as a whole.

“Our progress up to this year has been proving the value proposition of the [Intel Architecture] in the mobile space,” McCloskey said in an interview with VR-Zone.

Intel competing on merits

McCloskey told that Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has been successful in demonstrating its value proposition across various platforms and different form factors. Over the past year, the chip maker has worked with devices including Lenovo’s K900 and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 3. With its high-performance mobile chips, the company has been able to debunk various untrue “things about its battery life, thermals, performance,” adds McCloskey.

According to McCloskey, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)’s mobile chips can compete on technical specs, while the contra revenue funds should be looked only as investments to “unleash the value of the platform.” The executive also said that competing on merit is the most exciting part, as this is the firms “bread and butter.” Intel can be credited with a number of innovative designs, and the company continues to be a leader when it comes to battery life and performance.

Project SoFIA to enhance competitiveness

However, McCloskey did acknowledge the fact that though Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has made significant progress and learned a lot “of what it takes to be successful,” the company still has to do a lot of “catching up” to even create a mature mobile ecosystem. The executive accepts that ARM-based vendors have a better ecosystem that offers more flexibility.  To close the gap, Intel is constantly working with China and Taiwan ecosystems.

Providing integrated connectivity is one of the prime factors that make mature ARM-based alternatives a better option for mobile devices. Furthermore, the lack of integrated connectivity limits Intel’s ability to win in hardware segment. However, McCloskey is optimistic that with the roll-out of Project SoFIA, which includes 3G and the much awaited 4G LTE in 2015, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) will be able to win over smartphone and tablet vendors. Though Intel will be a late entrant, after the launch of SoFIA, the chip maker will be on par with ARM vendors.
