Netflix Index: Canada ISPs Offer Faster Streaming Than U.S.

Updated on

Consumers in Canada are enjoying faster video streaming during prime time than the United States based on data from Netflix ISP Speed Index for April. Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) included Canada for the first time in its monthly ISP Speed Index, which measures the speed of the prime time streaming experience from different internet service providers (ISPs) worldwide.

Canadian ISPs beats U.S. counterparts, according to Netflix ISP Speed Index

According to the online video streaming company, it is not surprising for Bell Aliant Inc (TSE:BA) and Bell Canada to top the Netflix ISP Speed Index because of their fiber services. Data shows that Bell Canada’s average speed is 3.19 Mbps, while Bell Aliant’s average speed is 3.10 Mbps followed by cable service provider Shaw with an average speed of 3.0 Mbps.

The average speeds offered by Bell Canada and Bell Aliant Inc (TSE:BA) beat the average speeds from internet service providers (ISPs) in the United States including Cablevision Systems Corporation (NYSE:CVC) Optimum with an average speed of 3.0 Mbps; Cox Communications 2.90 Mbps, and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSK) (NASDAQ:CMCSA) 2.77 Mbps.

Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) observed that the average speed for Netflix video streams continues to improve on the network of Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSK)(NASDAQ:CMCSA) as it rose to the third position last month.

European ISPs still offer fastest speeds

Although the average speeds of the two Canadian ISPs were higher than their U.S. counterparts, Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) noted the rankings of Bell Canada and Bell Aliant Inc (TSE:BA) are still lower than most ISPs in the European region.

The Netflix ISP Speed Index shows that in Denmark, WAOO (Trefor) and WAOO (SEAS-NVE) offer an average speed of 3.51 Mbps and 3.43 Mbps, respectively. In Finland, Kymp offers an average speed of 3.36 Mbps, while Norway’s Altibox and Get each offer an average speed of 3.32 Mbps.

According to Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), Telenor ISPs in Denmark, Norway and Sweden show continued improvement as well as Ireland’s UPC. In the United Kingdom, BT offers the highest speed of 2.93 Mbps followed by Virgin with an average speed of 2.82 Mbps.

The Netflix ISP speed Index is based on data obtained from over 48 million Netflix subscribers worldwide. According to the online video streaming company, the data reflects the average performance of all Netflix, Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX) streams on every ISP’s network.
