Leading virtualization software provider VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) is adding a new disaster recovery cloud service to its product line. The company announced today, April 15th, that it is now offering disaster-recovery-as-a-service from its five vCloud Hybrid Service’s datacenters. This service will offer a method to implement disaster recovery for mission-critical virtualized systems without requiring a physical recovery site or purchasing VMware’s current business continuity product vCenter Site Recovery Manager.
vCloud Hybrid Service-Disaster Recovery
The new vCloud Hybrid Service-Disaster Recovery from VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) costs $835 a month. However, purchasers can protect as many virtual machines as they wish up to 10 GHz of CPU and 20 GB of RAM, according to Mathew Lodge, VP of VMware’s vCloud Hybrid Service. The new disaster recovery service also comes with a full 1 TB of storage.
A one-month subscription to the new cloud disaster recovery service includes 30 days of operations during disaster recovery. VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW)’s cloud centers in Slough, UK; Santa Clara, California; Las Vegas; Dallas and Sterling, Va. are utilized to provide the disaster recovery service. Given that disaster recovery operations run on the same infrastructure as other vCloud Hybrid Services, a customer can take advantage of any unused capacity in a given datacenter to support continued operations. Customers may purchase additional CPU, RAM and storage as required.
Other VMWare business continuity services
VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) has another disaster recovery product line for virtual machines in the datacenter, but it requires customers to implement the recovery themselves, including finding a recovery location. VCenter Site Recovery Manager standard edition includes up to 75 VMs for $5,899, as well as 12 months of support. Recovery manager with three years of support currently costs $7,578, while the enterprise edition, which can support any number of virtual machines, is priced close to $11,000, as listed on VMware partner SHI’s website.
