Updated on

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has taken another major step just days after introducing a new Facebook-like user profile. The microblogging company said in a blog post Thursday that it will roll out real-time notifications on the web interface to make its platform more interactive. It will be rolling out the new feature to all users in the next few weeks.

You have to be logged in to your Twitter account to get notifications

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) executive Michael Ducker said that you will be notified if someone replies, favorites or retweets one of your tweets. What’s more, it will also notify you when you have a new follower or a direct message. These real-time notifications are ‘fully interactive’, meaning you can retweet, favorite, reply or follow right from the popup. However, you need to to be logged in to your Twitter account to get these popup notifications.

If these notifications irritate you, you can customize and turn off the types of notifications you don’t want to see. Go to the Settings page on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), and you’ll see options for choosing notifications. The San Francisco-based company already offers push notifications on its mobile apps. Twitter said it will give users an interactive experience similar to the one on mobile apps.

Twitter seems to be confident about this feature

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has been testing these real-time notifications for quite some time now. Some users saw them as early as January. The company is experimenting with a wide variety of new features amid pressure to revive its user growth, and boost user engagement as much as possible. Since the company is rolling out five different types of notifications on the Web together, Twitter seems to be a lot more confident about this feature.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) shares inched up 0.27% to $41.45 in pre-market trading Friday. The stock has declined more than 31% this year so far amid concerns around its slowing user growth.
