With 974 million existing Twitter accounts you might think that Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) just continues to grow, but new research by Twopcharts suggests that 44% of Twitter’s near billion user accounts have never sent a single tweet.

Twitter activity monitoring

Twopcharts is a website that monitors Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) activity but is, unlike Twitter, unable to see when a user signs in but rather relies on monitoring when an account tweets something or retweets another account’s 140 characters.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has never suffered from being unable to recruit people to their network, up to and including fraudulent accounts, it does struggle to get people tweeting.

Presumably, there are millions of people who don’t send tweets but find Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) to be a valuable resource. The writer of this piece being among that group of unknown like-minded individuals. I’ve not sent a single tweet but find it a valuable news source and occasionally a nice diversion.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) does not comment on third-party data disclosures and declined to comment when contacted by numerous news outlets following the study from Twopcharts. If they did, they would certainly stand by their numbers and continue to claim that its user base and engagement levels continue to grow. In its first earnings call since going public, Twitter said it added 9 million users for the quarter with 8 million of them coming from outside the United States.

Engagement, however, remains key as that is what drives advertising revenues and Twitter has unveiled a number of features recently, like pictures in the timeline, to get more people involved more often and with more ease.

Less than a quarter of accounts tweeted in the last month

Additional data from Twopcharts has 30% of existing accounts having only sent 1-10 tweets with 13% of accounts having sent over 100 micro-missives. Additionally, only 23% of accounts have tweeted in the last 30 days.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) had a rough day to close the week while hovering near its all-time low of $38.80. The stock dropped as low as $39.68 before closing the day at $40.05 down $1.29 or 3.12%.
