Earth Day – a global celebration
Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22. On the occasion events are held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.
The idea of celebrating Earth Day came from Gaylord Nelson, who was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin. In the year 1969, there was a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Nelson after witnessing this conceived the idea of coming up with a movement that would motivate the people to pay attention towards the air and water pollution. He wanted environmental protection to be included as an important aspect of the national political agenda.
