Amazon To Announce Smartphone By June [REPORT]

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), the online retail giant, is going to try its hand in the smartphone space, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Amazon is set to release this smartphone in the second half of this year, and with this move, the company would be in direct competition with market leaders like Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Reportedly, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is going to announce the phone by the end of June and shipping will start by the end of September, ahead of the much-awaited holiday season. Amazon has been showcasing early prototypes to developers in San Francisco and its hometown Seattle in recent weeks.

Amazon smartphone would be capable of displaying 3D images without glasses

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), in an attempt to stand out in an already crowded smartphone market will be coming up with a “screen capable of displaying seemingly three-dimensional images without special glasses.” The smartphone would feature retina-tracking technology which would be embedded in four front-facing cameras, so as to make the image appear in 3D, which would give a hologram-like effect.

It has been reported that Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been developing this smartphone for a long time, but the device will be now ready to launch in a few months. Amazon these days seems to be focusing on hardware, as the company also recently announced its own set top box named Fire TV, which will be competing directly with Apple TV and Roku. And now, the company is ready to take on smartphone giants like Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) which alone holds 49% of the worldwide smartphone market, according to market researcher IDC.

Amazon’s approach to hardware is different from other manufacturers. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) offers their hardware at an attractive price and Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, says that the company wants to profit from customers buying their services, instead of profiting from devices themselves. Because of this approach, we hope that Amazon would price their smartphone affordably, unlike Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Turning to the subject of apps for this so-called Amazon smartphone, Amazon already has an app store which features 200,000 apps. Presumably, this is where smartphone owners will be able to obtain their software from.

Only time would tell how Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is thinking to tackle the competition in the smartphone space, and how it will market and sell its first-ever smartphone. For now, just like others, we’re also excited to see what Amazon has to offer. 3D technology in a smartphone and that too without glasses definitely sounds exciting.
