Why Isn’t Apple, Inc. Active On Twitter, Facebook?

Updated on

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has more than 10 million fans on Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB). But the iPhone maker has never shared a news piece or interacted with anyone on the world’s largest social platform. The @Apple handle on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) has only 26,000 followers. In contrast, @Microsoft has 4.1 million, @Google has 8 million and @BlackBerry has 3.9 million followers on the microblogging site. Think it’s odd Apple has so few followers? The truth is that the Cupertino-based tech giant isn’t on Twitter. That @Apple is an inactive account, and according to CNBC, it doesn’t belong to Apple.

At least Apple CEO is on Twitter

However, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) does have Twitter accounts representing its divisions. For example, @iTunesMusic boasts of 5.4 million followers, @AppStore is followed by 2.4 million people, @iTunesTrailers has about 2.3 million followers and another nine accounts have a combined follower base of 2.5 million. Apple chief Tim Cook has a fan base of 400,000. Though various accounts managed by the company have a combined 13 million followers, none of them is the official voice of the tech giant.

Belus Capital analyst Brian Sozzi says that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has no interest in social networks. The company has a set schedule for its product intros, and if it deviates from the schedule, the markets may perceive it as the company succumbing to market pressures. Sozzi believes that the tech giant maintains its premium status all around.

Apple likes controlling everything

Looking at other social networks, the tech giant has 1.8 million subscribers on YouTube and 1.4 million fans on LinkedIn Corp (NYSE:LNKD). You will be surprised to know that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has shared 41 video clips on YouTube. Those videos have fetched millions of views but zero comments. That’s because Apple has disabled comments. It shows that the company wants to control all communication with outsiders. Apple likes controlling everything possible. It cannot control Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR), Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) and other ecosystems.

There are a number of unofficial Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) accounts on Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR). For example, Ethervision‘s @iPhoneTeam has more than 380,000 followers.
