A new rumor has surfaced that Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd. (TPE:2354) has completed the testing phase for sapphire covered iPhone. According to Apple Daily, the testing took place at a Foxconn-owned factory in Longhua district.

Testing phase for iPhones

There was a low number of test units, about 100 prototypes, but this test is still a big deal for the Cupertino-based tech giant. Sapphire Glass is purported to make the manufacturing process more complex. Apple Insider added:

“The publication also notes that two of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s existing sapphire suppliers — Synopsys and Bern Optics — have made significant investments in equipment and tooling in recent weeks. Synopsys and Bern Optics currently provide sapphire covers for the iPhone’s rear-facing camera as well as the the iPhone 5s’s Touch ID sensor. Rumors that Apple would move to a sapphire cover for its next-generation handset first appeared in 2012, though subsequent releases — including the iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s — have continued to feature Gorilla Glass. The whispers grew louder last November when word broke that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had signed a $578 million deal with GT Advanced Technologies to open a sapphire manufacturing plant in Arizona, though some have speculated that plant may instead produce sapphire for a so-called ‘iWatch.'”

An expansion shows a possible increase in future orders.

Sapphire glass rumor was confirmed

A recent interview with tech company’s chief executive officer Tim Cook confirmed the rumor of sapphire glass but he wouldn’t divulge any more details regarding the matter. This is a company that takes pride in their revolutionary products. It’s key for the tech giant to change up their devices every year to keep consumers interested. A sapphire covered phone is an exciting possibility for fans, especially as it connotes the upscale feel that’s synonymous with their products.

Right now, there is no word on if the sapphire covered iPhone would debut this year or next year.
