iPhone 6 Curved Display Can Revolutionize Smartphone Industry

Updated on

The iPhone 6 has long been rumored to feature a flexible display. And Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s recent patent filings have only fueled those speculations. Dutch concept designer Lewi Hussey has come up with a concept design of the iPhone sporting a flexible display. Hussey’s concept phone has a 5-inch edge-to-edge screen with OLED retina display. The concept shows the iPhone 6 with just 5 millimeter thickness. But recent reports suggest that the iPhone 6 is likely to have a 6mm thickness, making it the slimmest smartphone ever.

iPhone 6 to start a new trend

Flexible displays are seen as the wave of the future. If the iPhone 6 comes with a curved display, it will start a new trend in the smartphone industry like never before. LG G Flex and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s Galaxy Round already have curved displays. But the G Flex hasn’t seen a widespread release in the U.S., and it’s not been wildly popular. The Galaxy Round was more of a limited-edition device released primarily in South Korea.

Though Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s upcoming Galaxy S5 has also been rumored to feature a curved display. But latest reports revealed that the device is unlikely to have a flexible display. In contrast, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s key supplier  Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) said last week that it will soon start the production of 3D curved Gorilla glass that can bend up to 80 degrees. Experts say Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW)’s technology is likely to be used in the iPhone 6.

What a flexible display iPhone 6 can do?

Can a flexible display really revolutionize the smartphone industry? Tech experts say it’s not just another gimmick. A curved display can significantly improve the end user experience. It can reduce the glare, enhance battery life and give users more versatility. Once a flexible display comes into the mainstream smartphone market, it’s highly likely to stay there.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has already said that the iPhone 6 will be nothing less than a blockbuster. The device is rumored to feature an improved iOS 8, a 64-bit A8 processor, 13MP camera with professional shooting features, an eye scanner, a scratch-proof design and a higher price tag.
