Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) continues to expand its fast charging stations to allow the owners of its electric vehicles to travel long distances easily. The electric car manufacturer aims to put up superchargers between cities along well-traveled highways in North America and Europe.
Indiana, Michigan latest in Tesla’s expanding network
In the United States, Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) is opening its first supercharger stations in Michigan and Indiana. The electric car manufacturer aims to put up total of three superchargers in Michigan and five in Indiana as part of effort to fill the gaps in its fast charging system enabling coast-to-coast travel in the country.
Its first supercharger in Michigan will allow the owners of its vehicles to travel between Detroit, Lake Michigan, and Chicago. The fast charging station is located in St Joseph, near the intersection of Interstates 94 and 96, which are very familiar to travelers going to and from the Motor City and surrounding towns.
The new supercharger station of Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) in Indiana is located Mishiwaka, along Interstate 80, a major interstate. The electric car manufacturer’s target is complete the installation of its superchargers to allow coast-to-coast travel sometime this winter.
Tesla has 40 supercharger stations in North America
Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) has 40 available supercharger stations in North America in addition to the newly opened stations in Michigan and Indiana. The company aims to cover 80% of the U.S. population and parts of Canada by 2014, and 98% by 2015. It has 8 supercharger stations in Europe.
The superchargers have the ability to recharge the batteries of its Model S vehicles 20 times faster than the majority of public charging stations. The company said its superchargers are capable of recharging the battery of its vehicle in 20 to 30 minutes to run around three hours.
Last week, it was reported that a dealer for Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) sold a Model S vehicle to a person who used bitcoins as payment. Pietro Frigerio of Lamborghini Newport Beach in Costa Mesa, California said he converted the bitcoins to U.S. dollars. He told CNBC, “So you could say that I didn’t want bitcoins. And I never touched bitcoins.”
