Samsung Galaxy S5 May Feature 20MP Camera [REPORT]

Updated on

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) is reportedly working on a 20 megapixel camera for its upcoming mobile devices in the second half of 2014, according to a report from Korea’s ET News. However, reports of ET have not been very strong on Samsung, but similar news has also been reported by more than one source earlier that the Korean firm is working on a bigger camera.

It is expected that the Korean electronics major will integrate the bigger and better camera into the Galaxy S5, which is contrary to the estimations that the S5 will sport a 16 megapixel camera.

Now Samsung toying with powerful camera

Cameras have been one of the most sought after features in smartphones and almost every big company like LG, Nokia and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is putting extreme effort to have an edge over others in terms of the device’s camera. Apart from the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy Note 3 is also up for launch in 2014.

It is expected that Samsung will fix a 16 megapixel camera in 25% of its mobile devices to be launched next year, which according to ET add up to 90 million Samsung smartphones and phablets.

Prior to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930), Nokia launched the Lumia 1520, which has a 20 megapixel PureView rear camera with autofocus and Zeiss optics.

Galaxy S5 expected specifications

The Samsung Galaxy S5, which looks like a strong contender for a 20 megapixel camera, is expected to be launched in January 2014, and will be priced at a premium over the Galaxy S4, according to reports. Samsung is expected to give a metallic look to the Galaxy S5 with a metallic casing instead of a polycarbonate body.  Prior to Samsung, HTC and Apple launched a phone with metallic casing, which looked better than Samsung’s polycarbonate finishing. Also, the Korean company is expected to fit a 64 bit processor in the Galaxy S5, according to reports. An executive of ARM revealed that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) has placed an order with the company to supply the new chips for its upcoming device in 2014.

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to be sharper and have a higher resolution. The Galaxy S5 is expected to have a 2K display that is 560 ppi for just a 5-inch screen. The operating system of the Galaxy S5 will be the latest version of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Android, which is 4.4 Kit Kat. It is rumored that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S5 based on in-house Tizen version along with Android version.
