Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s Galaxy S5 is long-rumored to ditch the plastic casing and come with an aluminum body. However, the latest reports by ETNews suggest that the Galaxy S5 may feature a scratch-resistant diamond metal casing. This will help Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) compete better with Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s upcoming iPhone 6, which is rumored to have a scratch-proof screen made of sapphire crystal.
ETNews says that the Korean electronics giant is testing the ‘diamond metal surface treatment.’ However, the company won’t be coating real diamonds to make the device sturdy because that would be an extremely costly affair. Instead, the Galaxy S5 would have a ‘diamond-like’ material coated on its metal case. Though it may trigger a few changes in the Galaxy S5’s external design, it will make the device resistant to scratches and deformation.
Diamond coating for Galaxy S5 or Galaxy Note 4?
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) created a synthetic diamond material by exposing carbon to high pressure and high temperature. Then the powder or liquid synthetic diamond would be coated on the metal surface of the Galaxy S5. However, a section of industry experts doubt the the use diamond coating in Galaxy S5 because the device is expected to hit the market in Q1 2014. The Korean company may not be able to use this technology on a mass scale so soon. Instead, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) may use the diamond casing for the Galaxy Note 4, which may be launched in late 2014.
Recently, Taiwan-based chassis makers told Digitimes that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) may or may not use a metal case of Galaxy S5 because there hasn’t been a sign of mass production. Other expected features of the Galaxy S5 include a 16MP camera with ISOCELL technology, iris eye scanner, a QHD (2560x1440p) screen, Android 4.4 Kit Kat OS and 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor. There have also been reports that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) and AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) are already testing the Galaxy S5 internally.
