Apple Inc. (AAPL) Shoppers Spending A Lot More Than Android Users

Updated on

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) users’ love of spending money has been well-documented, and now they’ve out-spent Android users yet again. This time, according to Business Insider‘s Jay Yarow, it’s about holiday shopping as observed in a report from International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM). This latest report follows a similar report from IBM which looked at spending on the iOS and Android platforms just on Cyber Monday.

Apple users out-spend Android users by a ton

This new report from IBM included details on spending through Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS platform and through Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Android platform. In terms of a percentage of total online sales, shoppers spent more than five times as much on iOS devices as they did on Android devices. That gave Apple a 23% share of online Christmas spending, compared to just 4.6% for Google’s Android operating system.

On average, iOS users spent nearly $94 per order, while Android users spent less than $50 per order. In addition, iOS had 32.6% of overall traffic shares, while Android had 14.8%.

Apple versus Android in market share

Of course these numbers cover only the U.S. However, statistics show that Android has the biggest share of the operating system market in the U.S. So what does this really mean for Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)? The idea here is pretty similar to the sentiment which can be gleaned from other reports. Google may have the lion’s share of the market, but in order to make money, the company needs people to spend money on its Android platform.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), meanwhile, continues to laugh all the way to the bank, as these numbers suggest that not only do Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) users potentially have more money, but they like to spend it too. And Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) continues to hold the greatest share of smartphone profits, which is remarkable since Android beats it in overall market share.
