Galaxy S5 May Have A Three-Sided Display [REPORT]

Updated on

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930)’s Galaxy S5 device may be equipped with a wraparound display. According to a report from Bloomberg, the Korean company will launch a smartphone next year that will be equipped with YOUM technology.

A catchy feature for Galaxy S5

According to Bloomberg, all three sides of the phone will work independently, which indicates that notifications and other tasks can be done by simply touching the sides of the phone.

Bloomberg reported that one catchy feature of Samsung wraparound technology will be to read the message from different angles as the wraparound display engineering effectively extends the screen’s reach beyond the front portion.

Though it was not mentioned that which phone Samsung will adopt for this technology, but it is widely expected that Samsung Galaxy S5 might be the one. There have been reports of Samsung working on improving aspects like the camera and processor for its next phone. Also, the resolution is expected to be increased in the new flagship handset.

It is widely anticipated that the new gadget from Samsung will be launched in the third quarter of 2014 with July as the earliest possible debut time. However, it is not clear if the Galaxy S5 is the device that will be launched.

Samsung working on many new features

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) recently showcased new technologies at its Analyst Day, an event held for the first time in eight years. These technologies will be used in the new phone by the company, coming in 2014. The Korean major is working on increasing the display with AMOLED panels with pixel densities of up to 560 ppi. If Samsung launches 560 ppi phone it will surpass HTC one, which currently has 469 ppi. With such enhancements, the handset will be an upgrade from Full HD handsets to WQHD or 2560×1440 pixels.

The Galaxy S5 maker is also looking forward to introducing UHD or 4K displays on its devices from 2015. Although there is little need of such resolution on the handset, it can prove a differentiator for Samsung outperforming the competition.

iPhone to be equipped with similar technology

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 6 is also expected to come up with similar technology where the front as well as back panel will be equipped with wraparound technology.

In coming years, Apple is also expected to release larger screens and new generations of iOS smartphones in two sizes, probably with invisible controllers or capacitive keys that will disappear from sight when not in use.
