Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)’s has initiated the “She will connect” program in Africa to support women in digital education. Intel believes that women in the developing countries possess less skills and knowledge about digital literacy than their male counterparts. Intel will partner with global and local NGOs and government organizations to cover 5 million women on the continent and bring down the gender gap by half.
Education through gaming
Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) published a report this year titled “Women and the Web,” showing the Internet gender gap statistics, and social and economic advantage of instilling Internet education for women. Renee Wittemyer, director of social impact for Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)’s said that the latest project, “She will connect,” is an attempt to act upon those findings.
“We put out a call [in that report] to double the number of women online in developing countries,” Wittemyer tells Marketing Daily.
The focus of “she will connect” will be on providing the literacy skills to women through online gaming platforms for smartphones and tablets, which will enhance digital literacy skills. The executive said that usually in developing economies, technology can be learned in a shared environment, like Internet Cafés, and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC)’s will try to compliment that by designing a game for mobile devices.
Additionally, Intel will join with World Pulse to integrate World Pulse’s digital training to existing digital networks to create a supportive peer network for women to learn in. Wittemeyer said that when women connect to other women they get social support and resources.
Other countries where Intel have same plans
Intel, apart from starting the program in Africa, will also resume its work in India to educate one million women through the company’s Easy Steps Digital Literacy Training Program, next year. Furthermore, in Latin America, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) has entered into partnership with the government and organizations to imbibe digital literacy training in Colombia, Mexico and Peru.
“Our teams in Latin America are excited to integrate [these programs] into their work,” Wittemyer says.
