GTA V Breaks Numerous Guinness World Records

Following the recent shootings at the Navy Yard, new Fox & Friends host Megan Hasselbeck made the absurd suggestion that the incident had nothing to do with gun control, but was clearly the result of violent video games. Beyond the sheer irresponsibility and ridiculous nature of these remarks (which can be seen here), Hasselbeck called for a measure of frequency when it comes to these games. “Are more people susceptible to playing video games?” Hasselbeck wondered. “Is there a link between a certain age group or [demographic] in 20- to 34-year-old men, perhaps, that are playing these video games and their violent actions?”

“What about frequency testing?” she added. “How often has this game been played? I’m not one to get in there and say, monitor everything, but if this, indeed, is a strong link, right, to mass killings then why aren’t we looking at frequency of purchases per person? And also, how often they’re playing and maybe they time out after a certain hour.”

On the off chance that this woman isn’t a complete lunatic and has a valid point, the United States is in store for an unprecedented year of violence given the amount of people who bought and are playing Grand Theft Auto V.

GTA V records

While a number of the records that Grand Theft Auto V beat with a baseball bat come from worldwide sales, most countries have some gun control that would prevent the nonsense Hasselbeck was spouting and the inevitable shootings should be limited to our borders.

Yesterday, Guinness announced that Grand Theft Auto V has set six world records since its launch, adding to its previous title of “most viewed trailer.” The game, which launched in late September, has become the best-selling action-adventure game of all time, the best-selling video game (overall), and the fastest entertainment property to ever net $1 billion, including movies, music, etc. The game also has reached the heights on revenue generated in a 24-hour period, and that includes the iPhone.

GTA V launch

While few thought that GTA V would be anything but a smash hit, its launch blew away all expectations of any analyst. Rockstar Games, the title’s developer, announced last month that the game sold 11.2 million units in its first 24 hours, netting $815.7 million in revenue. From there, a billion dollars in revenue was nothing and it topped that mark in less than three days.

“Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it’s taken on the might of Hollywood and won,” Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said in a statement on Tuesday.
