Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has announced the date for its next Surface launch event. The company sent out invitations today for the event, which will take place on Monday, September 23rd, in New York. The event will start at 10:30 a.m. The Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) Surface 2 and Surface 2 Pro are expected to be unveiled at the event.

Microsoft Surface 2 Event Set For September 23

The launch of the next line of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) tablets is interesting in the wake of the massive losses the company took from last year’s Surface models. The company wrote down $900 million on its Surface tablets back in July. The tablet did not sell anywhere near the numbers the company expected.

Surface 2 on the way

The best rumors suggest that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will change little this time around. The company is expected to launch two tablets, one running Windows Rt and a second beefier model running fully-powered Windows 8. The company is trying to push its tablets as direct competitors to those running iOS and Android, as well as a replacement for work.

That model did not result in success last year. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is facing incredibly tough competition, and its ecosystem is nowhere near as developed as those of its competitors. The company cannot afford to compete on price, and the quality of its ecosystem is out of its hands in many ways.

Microsoft aiming for Apple

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is by far the most successful company in the tablet market, and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is attempting to take its business with the Surface tablets. That proved a poor strategy last year. If Microsoft doesn’t change its strategy, it might be facing more losses in 2014.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is undergoing huge changes at the moment. Steve Ballmer is resigning from his post at the head of the company, but Microsoft doesn’t seem to be altering its strategy. Over the last two years, that strategy seems more and more focused on beating Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) at its own game.

The new Surface will be launched on September 23, and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to release its new iPad some time around the start of October. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is once again going head to head with Apple on Apple’s turf. Holiday sales are unlikely to show a victory for the creator of the Zune.
