Gecko Aims to Make your Smartphone Smarter with Motion Alert & More

Updated on

Wouldn’t it be great if we could make our smartphone smarter? Wouldn’t it be great if our smartphone could alert us about theft or monitor whether your loved ones are taking pills on schedule or not? That’s exactly what Gecko, a new Indiegogo project from Bangalore, India aims to do.

Gecko Aims to Make your Smartphone Smarter with Motion Alert & More

Functions of Gecko

Gecko is a small coin shaped device that connects to your smartphone via low energy Bluetooth to help you monitor various things, and it also comes with motion and gesture controls.

This small device is very useful to track the whereabouts of everyday objects, pets or anything else to make sure that it is not lost. You can stick the device on anything, be it your wallet, luggage, carry bag or keychain to ensure that no one picks that up. For example, if you’re at airport and your flight is delayed, then you might want to take a nap without worrying that someone would pick your suitcase up. Whenever it detects any movement, it will trigger the alarm.

What Gecko can do:

  • Trigger photo clicks without touching your smartphone
  • Control music on your smartphone
  • Tag your door to know when it’s opened
  • Tag it to your pet to know when they try to sneak out of your home
  • Tag Gecko to anything, and you can locate it within a 100 feet radius
  • Know if your loved ones are taking proper medications on schedule

Gecko supported devices

Gecko can work with iOS and Android devices. As mentioned earlier, it is a Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth Smart) device, and powered with TI CC2541 SOC. There’s a buzzer for alerts, LED indicator, accelerometer sensor for motion detection, and removable coin cell. Average battery life is said to be one year (but it depends on the actual usage scenario).

According to its team, “We started off building Gecko almost an year ago. We wanted to build a versatile and extendible Bluetooth Smart device that offers long battery life, with replaceable battery and motion sensor.” The funding will be used to mass produce this device, and to take it to the “next steps of tooling and commercial production.”

Gecko’s funding goal

The Gecko project has a funding goal of $50,000, of which it has received $17,575 until now. It has still 35 days left. If you’re interested in this small useful device, then you can get it for $20, and receive free access to the Gecko app. The estimated delivery date is December 2013.

Overall, Gecko seems to be an impressive device, provided it works as promised. Head over to Indiegogo to back this project.
