Apple Inc. (AAPL) iPhone 5S Targeted By Hackers, Bounty Offered

Updated on

This is one of those stories you just can’t make up. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone 5S doesn’t even hit store shelves until tomorrow, but already hackers have their eyes on the fingerprint scanner. And they’re running a bounty to the hacker who is able to crack the TouchID sensor.

Bounty offered for iPhone 5S hacker

Seth Rosenblatt of CNET reports that the site ISTouchIDhackedyet.com is offering the bounty. The site was created by Nick DePetrillo, who’s an independent security researcher. The bounty is currently worth more than $16,000, including over $14,609 in cash, plus bitcoins currently valued at $1,021, and other prizes.

Some of the other prizes include a free CipherLaw app which can be used to put a patent on the hack, plus a stash of alcohol. Bottles of Maker’s Mark, Patron Silver, Laphroaig, Argenitne wine and Bulleit bourbon are included in the bounty. Of course, no hacker would be happy with booze and no sex, so there’s a “dirty sex book” that’s also part of the deal. And just in case the hacker wasn’t comfortable using his iPhone 5S after he hacked it, an iPhone 5C is also part of the deal for the winning hacker.

In case you’re wondering who would put up all of the items which are being included as part of the bounty, they’ve come from all sources of participants. This is basically a crowd-funded bounty targeting Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone. And no, Apple hasn’t released a statement on this yet.

The rules of collecting the bounty

DePetrillo explained all of the rules on Twitter. He said he’s got to see video proof of the iPhone 5S being successfully unlocked with a copied fingerprint. He said the video has to include evidence showing the enrollment of the fingerprint, the actual act of lifting that fingerprint, reproduction of the print and then finally, the unlock of the phone using the print.

Those who want to add to the bounty just have to tweet their offering to the hashtag #istouchidhackedyet.
