Mohamed Morsi’s supporters storm Virgin Mary Monastery in Minya
Dozens of supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi stormed the Virgin Mary Monastery located in a southern village in Upper Egypt’s Minya and broke its main gate on Wednesday, protesting against the security forces’ crackdown on the Mohamed Morsi supporters’ protest camps in Cairo that began earlier today.
They also broke into a historic Coptic site while chanting for their deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and against Christians and their pope, the monastery’s Bishop Yoanes told Aswat Masriya.
Eyewitnesses from the village reported seeing assailants carrying petrol bombs headed to the monastery.
The Mohamed Morsi loyalists have also attacked the Mar-Mina Church in Minya and torched one of its subordinate services buildings.
Egypt’s Army seals off Cairo’s Nasr Street with barbed wire
The Armed Forces Corps of Engineers sealed off Cairo’s Nasr Street near al-Azhar University with barbed wire to prevent supporters of the former president Mohamed Morsi from accessing the protest camp at Rabaa al-Adaweya Square.
Security forces launched a security operation on Wednesday morning to clear out the Mohamed Morsi’s sit-ins at Rabaa and Nahda Squares.
Five armed forces tanks and hundreds of soldiers are currently stationed in the area behind the barbed wire, an Aswat Masriya eyewitness reported.
Four dead, 40 injured during crackdown on Mohamed Morsi’s Cairo sit-ins
Four security personnel were killed and forty were injured during a crackdown on the Mohamed Morsi’s sit-ins at Cairo’s Rabaa al-Adaweya and Nahda Squares, the Ministry of Interior said on Wednesday.
The injured include 18 police officers, six policemen and 16 conscripts, the Middle East News Agency reported an Interior Ministry source as saying.
The ministry said earlier today that armed protesters are taking shelter inside Rabaa’s field hospital and firing at security forces.
Supporters of Mohamed Morsi set fire to church in Sohag, Egypt
Thousands of protesters who support Egypt’s deposed Islamist President Mohamed Morsi burned down a Coptic Orthodox Church in Sohag on Wednesday, according to eyewitnesses.
The protesters also set fire to a police car and seized weapons belonging to army soldiers in the Upper Egypt governorate, their actions came after the security forces began their crackdown on the Mohamed Morsi supporters’ protest camps in Cairo early on Wednesday.
The Security Directorate in Sohag announced its maximum state of alarm following the attack on a police car, whereas the protesters closed all the roads leading to the city council.
The police fired teargas to disperse the Mohamed Morsi supporters, who have also set fire to a tourists bus outside the church and vandalized shops owned by Christians.
