Earnings Preview: National-Oilwell, Merck, NYSE Euronext, OXY, Pfizer

Tuesday brings us more quarterly earnings reports from major companies. We’re expecting the latest results from National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NYSE:NOV), Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK), NYSE Euronext (NYSE:NYX), Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) and Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE:PFE).

National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NOV)

Analysts are expecting National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NYSE:NOV) to report second quarter earnings of $1.33 or $1.34 per share on revenue of $5.4 billion. Full-year earnings are projected to be between $5.57 and $5.63 on full-year revenue of approximately $22.2 billion.

The company has posted small positive surprises in four of its last five earnings reports, although it posted a slight negative surprise in the first quarter of this year. Analyst estimates for National-Oilwell Varco, Inc. (NYSE:NOV) have declined slightly over the last 90 days, falling from $1.42 per share 90 days ago to $1.34 per share 60 days ago, where it has remained since then.

Merck & Co., Inc. (MRK)

Analysts project that Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) will report second quarter earnings per share of 82 or 83 cents on revenue of $11.2 billion. Full-year earnings per share are expected to be $3.48 to $3.49 per share on full-year revenue of $45.2 billion.

The drug maker has come out slightly ahead of consensus in each of the last five quarters. Analysts have moved their EPS estimates for Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK) down slightly over time, dropping it from 91 cents per share to 82 cents per share, according to Zacks.

NYSE Euronext (NYX)

Analysts are expecting that NYSE Euronext (NYSE:NYX) will report second quarter earnings of 58 cents per share on revenue of $600 million. Full-year earnings are expected to be $2.29 on $2.4 billion.

The exchange operator posted small positive surprises in of the last three quarters, although in the second quarter of last year, it posted a slight negative surprise. Consensus estimates have risen from 56 cents per share 60 days ago to 58 cents per share now.

Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY)

Analysts believe that Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) second quarter earnings of between $1.61 and $1.68 per share on revenue of $5.9 billion to $6.32 billion. Full-year earnings are projected to be around $7.14 per share on full-year revenue of $24.8 billion.

The company’s last three earnings reports have been small positive surprises, and analysts have lowered their earnings estimates over time. Ninety days ago, consensus for Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY)’s second quarter earnings was $1.75 per share, and that has fallen to $1.61 per share now, according to Zacks.

Pfizer, Inc. (PFE)

Analysts are estimating that Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE:PFE) will report second quarter earnings of between 54 cents and 56 cents per share on revenue of approximately $13.1 billion. Full-year earnings are expected to be $2.17 per share on full-year revenue of $51.9 billion.

In the same quarter a year ago, the company posted a positive surprise, although it came in slightly below consensus for the first quarter of this year. Analysts have lowered their expectations for Pfizer, Inc. (NYSE:PFE) slightly over the last 90 days, bringing consensus from 58 cents per share to 54 cents per share over the last three months.
