Apple, BlackBerry, Nokia Compete For Numbers In Europe, US, and Mexico

Smartphones powered by the Android operating system of Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) are dominating in Europe, United States, and Mexico based from Kantar Smarphone OS Data, according to Tavis McCourt, analyst at Raymond James.

According to McCourt, data showed that the market share of Android smartphones increased from 61.3 percent last year to 70.4 percent in Europe. Among European countries, the Android OS has the highest market share in Spain with 92.5% and lowest share in Great Britain with 56.6%.

The market share of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iOS in Europe declined from 19.2% last year to 17.8%. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s Windows Phone OS has 6.8% market share, up from 4.3%. Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s BlackBerry 10 operating system has only 2% market share, a decline of 7% y/y.

In the United States, the Android OS remained the market leader with 52%, an increase of only 0.1% year-over-year.  The iOS experienced the highest growth rate in the country. Its market share went up by 3.5% from 38.4% to 41.9% y/y.

Google Android Platform Rose In Mexico

In Mexico, Google Inc (NYSE:GOOG)’s platform rose by 27.1% to 60.3% y/y. Data showed that Android’s market share in the country jumped at the expense of Research In  Motion Ltd’s (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) BlackBerry 10 operating system. The Canadian smartphone manufacturer’s market share dropped significantly in Mexico from 32.3% to 11.3% y/y.

McCourt emphasized that the significant increase of the market share of Android OS highlighted its success in price-sensitive developing markets.

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V)’s Symbian operating system in Mexico also suffered a decline in Mexico. The Finnish smartphone manufacturer’s market share dropped from 27.2% to 10.3% y/y.

McCourt said that the market share of the iOS in urban China increased from 18.6% to 23.6% prior to the release of the iPhone 5. He also said that the percentage “likely overstates the total China share for iPhone by excluding poorer areas.

“These shifts are consistent with our expectations for modest y/y iPhone sales growth globally given the overall smartphone market is expected to grow roughly 36% y/y,” said McCourt.

The Android operating system has a 71.5% market share in China.

The shares of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) are trading around $420.80 per share, up by nearly 1 percent while  Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)s stock price is up by .47% to $886.43 per share on Wednesday afternoon.

The stock value of Research in Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) is down by nearly 1 percent to $9.56 per share while Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V)’s stock price is up by more than 2 percent to $3.93 per share on Wednesday afternoon trading in New York.
