Sony Announces Xperia ZR - Yet Another Waterproof Android Smartphone

Ever wanted to capture Full HD videos when you’re underwater? Well, that’s exactly what Sony’s next Android smartphone, Xperia ZR, can do. This new 4.6-inch phone is less powerful than its predecessor – the Sony Xperia Z, but it is better in terms of water resistance. Its level of water resistance—IP55 and IP58—is better than Sony’s current flagship phone, Sony Xperia Z, which is IP55 and IP57 compliant.

Sony Xperia ZR is waterproof up to 1.5m (5 feet) and with this phone, you can do underwater photography. Users can capture photos with the 13-megapixel camera that comes with an Exmor RS image sensor, and video can be captured in Full HD. Sony emphasizes words like “fresh water” which means you probably shouldn’t take it to the ocean, but nevertheless, it’s a great feature to have.

The phone is powered by a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro processor and 2GB of RAM. The NFC on the phone allows users to use various sharing functions. There’s a 4G LTE radio chip inside, for those on 4G network.

Here are the key features of the Xperia ZR:

  • 4.6” HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2
  • 1280 x 720p resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5 GHz processor with 2GB RAM for fast performance
  • 13MP fast capture camera with “Exmor RS for mobile” and HDR
  • microSD, up to 32 GB
  • 4G LTE
  • Waterproof and dust-resistant (IP55 /IP58) with durable design
  • Battery stamina mode for better battery life

The Sony Xperia ZR will be available in the second quarter. Four different colors are available for this model: black, white, pink, and mint. The phone will become available globally in Q2 2013 at a yet-undisclosed price. But by looking at the technical specs, it would be most probably be priced lower than the Xperia Z. Take a look at the video below which highlights the phone’s underwater capabilities.
