About half of the registered handsets were made by Nokia but the most popular smartphone is the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4S. These statistics were discovered by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority.
Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) (BIT:NOK1V) (HEL:NOK1V) manufactured about 50 percent of the mobile phones that were registered. Blackberry is in second place with 10.7 percent of the share, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (LON:BC94) (KRX:005930) has about 10.7 percent, and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has 8.4 percent. Sony Ericsson owns about 1.5 percent of the market shares. It’s important to point out that although Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) had a relatively low score, the iPhone 4S was still named the most popular model in the smartphone category.
Symbian was also considered the most common operating handset for users within the UAE with 50 percent of the market share. It’s followed by iOS, BlackBerry, and Android.
Mohammad Nasser Al Ghanim(Director General for TRA) explained, “A core function of our role is to keep consumers informed about the state of the market … studies like this are therefore very valuable and it is our intention to continue to provide industry insights as much as possible.”
