Research In Motion Ltd (BBRY) Targeted By April Fool’s Prank

Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) was rumored to have plenty of other products up its sleeve because of a supposedly leaked product roadmap. However, the leak appears to have been an April Fool’s prank.

This morning the Twitter account which posted the roadmap posted a graphic with the same background as the map. It read: “Happy April Fools’ ‘Gotta stay tuned ‘Cause there’s more to see (Unbreakable).”

The alleged leak and the new graphic both were posted via the Twitter account @BB10Leaks. Friday’s supposed leak was a roadmap that supposedly shows what’s ahead in Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB)’s near future. The map shows that a BlackBerry 10 tablet could be coming out in the third quarter of this year. Other items on the supposed roadmap are a second BlackBerry handset featuring a QWERTY keyboard and a phablet.

There are some reasons the tech community and a handful of tech news blogs may have believed the leaked map, which was posted on the Twitter account Friday. The map shows the release dates for the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10. It lists the Z10 launch during the first quarter of the year, which we know was true.

Then the launch of the Q10 is listed as between the first and second quarters. We’re expecting a release date for the Q10 to be announced very soon. The account doesn’t say where it got the roadmap, although it appears to be similar to the last roadmap, which was leaked back in July.

That roadmap predicted that Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) would release a 4G Playbook in December just ahead of January’s BlackBerry 10 launch. Of course that information turned out to be correct.

And now we know where the so-called tipster got this new roadmap: it was apparently a fake.

Shares of Research In Motion Ltd (NASDAQ:BBRY) (TSE:BB) rose more than 1 percent at the NASDAQ in Monday morning trades.
