Linkedin Adds New Facebook-Like Feature to Site

Updated on

LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE:LNKD) is the latest social media network to adopt features of competing networks. Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is said to be working on incorporating Twitter’s hashtag system.

Now LinkedIn is adopting the way Facebook Inc links the mentions of users’ and companies’ names. Twitter has a similar feature as well.

Linkedin Adds New Facebook-Like Feature to Site

The social media network officially announced the addition of the new feature a few hours after The Next Web posted that the network would be adding it. Just like on Facebook, users who want to tag another user or a company in their status update box can simply start typing the name into the box. Then a box with possible choices appears, making it easy to tag others in the post. Then the user or company mentioned in the post will be notified that they were mentioned in your post.

It doesn’t require the use of any special symbol to tag users or companies, however, when tagging users, it does have a couple of very basic limitations in order to keep the feature. LinkedIn users can only tag their own first-degree connections or other network members who are taking part in taking part in conversations via the posts’ comment areas on the LinkedIn homepage.

Making mention of other users and companies will make it easier for LinkedIn users to start conversations with the people in their networks. Also by limiting who users can tag, LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE:LNKD) provides continuity for its business model, which limits communications with those users aren’t connected with unless they pay the network.

The new feature starts rolling out today to English-speaking LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE:LNKD) members, and the network will roll it out to the rest of its users globally over the next few months.

At the time of this writing, shares of LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE:LNKD) were up 2.72 percent.
