Nokia Announces The Launch Of Lumia 920T In China

Nokia Lumia 920T will be the first Windows 8 phone to be launched in China Mobile Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:CHL)’s 3G services. The move is the latest one from Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT)’s endeavor to build impetus in China’s aggressively growing Smartphone market. Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) announced its lowest priced Windows phone in the initial target markets- China and India. Earlier in March, Nokia partnered with China Telecom to launch the Nokia 800 C, the first windows CDMA phone in the country.  The phone was also the first of the Lumia series exclusively personalized for that market.

Despite claiming the world’s largest user base in the world, China Mobile Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:CHL) could not offer any exclusive deal to Apple’s iPhone. The other two smaller competitors, China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (ADR) (NYSE:CHU) and China Telecom Corporation Limited (ADR) (NYSE:CHA) provide specific deals to iPhone, ensuring growing the customer base at a faster pace. However, that makes Lumia 920T a stand out, niche device for any China mobile subscriber. Remarkably, there are 15 million users of iPhone who operate on 2G networks, giving Nokia a real boost up.

The Finnish company suffered losses of $754 million in the last quarter, during which, it sold just 2.9 million Lumia Phones.  An agreement with China Mobile Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:CHL) at this point in time could provide Nokia access to 703 million subscribers without calling for any competition with iPhone.

“We are delighted to partner with China Mobile, the world’s largest operator, to introduce China’s first Lumia based on Windows Phone 8.  People around the world are responding positively to the new Lumia devices, and we’re confident that the enthusiasm will extend to China with the Lumia 920T,” said Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK).

To force the momentum of China’s windows phone ecosystem, Nokia announced that it will partner with Air China, which will enable consumers to have wireless chargers in Beijing airport VIP lounges. Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) also established its dedication by initiating the Nokia Experience and Innovation Centre (NEIC), the academy program and the booster program in partnership with the government and company. These initiatives provide ground-breaking Internet developers and entrepreneurs with business suggestions, technical back up, and a low cost operating environment, assisting them in turning their ideas into applications.
