Microsoft’s Surface Tablet Price To Start At $300

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) is gearing up to release the Surface Tablet, their first all-Windows based tablet computer. Unfortunately, the company has pretty much remained mum as to how they plan to price the new tablet. Will it cost a premium price like the Apple iPad, or will it be more budget-friendly, like many of the Android tablets on the market?

The company’s chief executive officer, Steve Ballmer, recently confirmed to the Seattle Times that the Surface Tablet should retail from $300 to $800, depending on whether they run with Windows 8 Pro or Windows RT. Ballmer also indicated that his company has zero plans to compete on the price with other companies. He just wants people to see the Surface Tablets as professional devices. If you say to somebody, would you use one of the 7-inch tablets, or, would somebody ever use a Kindle to do their homework? The answer is no; you never would. It’s just not a good enough product. It doesn’t mean you might not read a book on it.”

It’s reported that both Windows Surface Tablets are set to arrive in October, just in time for the holiday season.

The Surface Tablet will be available in two different versions:  Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT. The former will feature  a 10.6″ ClearType Full HD Display, microSDXC, USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort Video, Touch Cover, and 22 Mimo  Antennae. The latter will feature 10.6″ ClearType HD Display, USB 2.0, Touch Cover, and Micro HD Video 2.2 Mimo Antennae.

I wish I could say that I think Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has a real shot at making a dent in the tablet market, but sadly, I don’t. There’s not a whole lot of hype regarding the new products, and most people who already own a tablet aren’t likely to make the switch, especially if they are already happy with the product they already own. I would, however, like to see this company make a tablet that sells well on the market.
