Facebook Claims They Have No Immediate Plans To Expand To China

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is currently one of the world’s largest companies, with 950 million users from around the world, but that doesn’t mean they have plans to expand anytime soon. During a recent conference in Hong Kong, Jane Leung (North Asia director for Facebook) told people they do not have any plans to launch anytime soon in China.

Facebook Claims They Have No Immediate Plans To Expand To China

Her answer essentially echos what Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB)’s chief executive officer said one year ago. Though at the time, he also said that his company didn’t have plans to enter the public stock market, when less than 6 months later they did.

Despite the fact that China has banned it, people have been speculating that Facebook would eventually come to China. The company already launched social networks like Renren and Sina, both of which are considered censor-friendly.

If Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) could finally convince China to let them in, that would be great. Unfortunately, I doubt that will be an easy feat. It’s going to take a lot of work and convincing on their half to make it happen. Although it’s unlikely that Zuckerberg would ever cave in and make Facebook censor-friendly to please Chinese officials, he should be willing to stay flexible and open to meet their demands. I’m sure that one day Facebook will expand their website to China, but when and how is a different matter.

The future of Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is looking pretty good and I think it will continue to grow at a steady pace. It’s true that the company could increase their revenue in a big way if they expanded to China, but right now that’s just not in the books.   Facebook’s S-1 filing with the Untied States Securities and Exchange Commission (which happened to be a part of the company’s initial public offering) clearly stated that they could not, “find an approach to managing content and information that will be acceptable to us and to the Chinese government.”
