Yesterday, in San Francisco, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled the new iPhone 5 and along with it also announced new iPod Touch and iPod nano. The iPod touch, as we know it, is commonly termed as an iPhone without a phone.
For now the consumers have got the choice to choose between the iPod Touch 5th generation (latest models), and the 4th generation. The pricing of 5th gen iPod Touch is something that’s debatable, and now we have got the question of where does this new iPod Touch leave the iPad Mini?
According to Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), iPod Touch is the world’s most popular music player, as well as the most popular portable gaming device, and now it has received a significant upgrade. The new generation is thinner (6.1 mm) and lighter (88 grams) than the previous iPod Touch, and is powered by the same 4-inch display as the iPhone 5 and the same A5 processor that comes with iPhone 4S (whereas the iPhone 5 comes with A6 processor).
iPod Touch has been upgraded with a new 5 megapixel iSight camera, larger battery, the loop, EarPods, Siri, iOS 6, and a Lightning dock connector.
The storage has also been bumped. The fourth generation iPod Touch comes with 16GB and 32GB models, while the new fifth generation iPod Touch comes with 32GB and 64GB variants. But that’s not all, the price has also been bumped – the fifth generation iPod Touch 32GB model costs $299 and 64GB model costs $399.
Now let’s talk about the supposed iPad Mini, which is most likely going to launch next month, as per the rumors. The biggest problem with iPad Mini would be the price, which is the deciding factor for many consumers. The iPad 3 starts from $499 for the base model, while the iPad 2 costs $399. So now, amidst all these prices, where does the iPad Mini fit?
If Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) wants to capture the 7-inch tablet market, then it should be priced below the $299 mark, in order to compete with iPad 2 and iPad 3. Plus, the Cupertino company not only needs to compete with its own tablets, but also with other Android based tablets like the Nexus 7.
But if the new iPod Touch models with A5 processor and 4-inch screen costs $299, then can the company come out with a 7.85-inch iPad Mini and similar processor at the same price?
Surely, this seems very unlikely. We’ll need to wait one more month to find out about the iPad Mini.
