Cydia Tweak: Set Chrome as Default Browser on your iPhone and iPad

Updated on

Now that Google Chrome for iOS is released, this browser has become number one free app on the Apple’s iOS Store in just one day. That’s not all, this browser has still retained its position as the number one free app. Chrome comes with many amazing features like syncing your bookmarks, passwords and tabs, and also comes with incognito tab to browse without saving the history. It runs fast and smooth on your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

However, when opening a web page from third party app, iOS will open that web page via Safari and that’s the default behavior of iOS. For now, you cannot choose any other browser to open external links.

Here’s a new tweak for Cydia that lets you choose Google Chrome or any other browser as your default browser in iOS. Of course, your iOS device should be jailbroken in order to use this tweak.

Jailbreak apps developer – Ryan Petrich has released a new tweak named as “BrowserChooser” that lets you change your default browser.

To install this tweak, you need to first add a Cydia repo owned by the developer of this tweak. Fire up your Cydia and navigate to Manage > Sources > Edit > Add and then type the following repo :

Now tap on “Add Source”. Once this is done, simply search the name of this tweak which is “BrowserChooser” and then you can see it in the result displayed. Tap on it and then install it.

Once this is installed, go to Settings > BrowserChooser. From here, you can select your new default browser of your choice. If you have other browsers installed, then you’ll be able to see all those browsers in this list. For now, try setting Chrome as the default browser.

That’s all you need to do. With this tweak, all your external links will now be opened by Chrome (or any other browser that you have set as default).
