Value Investing and Risk Management

Updated on

My good friend Adib just gave a presentation on value investing to a group of MBA students. Adib is one of the hardest working and smartest friends of mine.  Adib was nice enough to let me repost the presentation here. The lecture was for more simple students who know little about value investing, but it is still a good read for anyone interested in sharpening their investment process.

First background:

Adib Motiwala is the founder and Portfolio Manager of Motiwala Capital LLC. Motiwala Capital LLC is a Registered Investment Advisor in the state of Texas. Adib Motiwala has an MBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Dallas. Adib Motiwala also has a Masters of Science in Computer Science from Texas A&M University. He has over ten years of experience in Software Development and Project Management.

Adib also does consulting work for a top hedge fund, but he would not like to disclose the name of it.

Value Investing is a proven strategy for achieving superior risk adjusted investment returns in the stock market. However, it is still one of the least followed strategies by individuals and institutions alike. Reasons such as focus on short term results, daily/weekly liquidity, urge to be fully invested at all times, bench marked investing, volatility, high frequency trading present value investors with excellent opportunities for generating superior returns. Risk Management is a central focus when investing. Basic risk control measures such as position sizing, sector concentration, business model risk, balance sheet risk, and valuation risk are employed by the practioner. The talk will be a practitioner’s overview of the Value Investing approach and a discussion of some of the risk management approaches employed.
