Google’s Pixel C and Nexus devices are getting the Android 7.1.2 Nougat update. Some users were already able to download it over the weekend, while some are still waiting for it. It is good to see that the search giant is still giving attention to a device which has not been a success.
What’s the Pixel C getting from Google?
The Google Pixel C has not garnered much attention since its launch almost one-and-a-half years ago. However, the company has been taking care of the Pixel C customer base by tweaking the phone’s features every now and then. Recently, Reddit users and 9to5Google confirmed that the Pixel C is getting a software update to enhance its interface.
Reddit posts by Pixel C owners suggest that a 340.1 MB update is already available for some users to download. The update doesn’t include just the latest version of the OS, Android 7.1.2; users will also receive the latest Android security patches released in the current year.
One of the most noticeable updates is the multitasking view. The search giant will also replace the scrolling list of open apps with a grid view, displaying the user’s eight most recently-used programs.The new updated version does not have the “all apps” button at the bottom of the screen, and users will now have to swipe the screen upward to see all the apps installed. The weather and date widget sits in the top-right corner of the screen, and instead of the search bar, users can now see the “G” logo in the top-left of the screen. Users can check for the upgrade in the “about” menu for system updates.
Apart from the Android update, the Pixel C will also get the much sought-after TWRP support. Although there are various ROMs available for the device, TWRP was missed, but this is no longer the case. Google, however, does not look very keen to bring Google Assistant in any of its tablets, including the Pixel C.
How the Android O developer preview is different
According to Android Police, the Android 7.1.2 update will also be available for the Nexus player set-up box. However, the company has yet to update its factory image pages and PTA with the new non-bets version.
Meanwhile, Android fans are also awaiting Android O, and much to their surprise, the company launched the first developer preview of the OS about two weeks ago. Google has kept the names of all its mobile operating system versions quite sweet (literally), and enthusiasts are hoping that once Android O releases, it may become Android Oreo.
One difference between the Android N and O previews is that for Android N, a quick over-the-air version was made available for those who wanted to get a feel for it. However, with Android O, that is not the case, as there is no Android beta channel right away. Instead, all developers who have a Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Pixel, Pixel XL or Pixel C will have to download it manually, notes TechCrunch.
