Bill Gross QEIII Might Be Coming [Video]

April 26, 2012

Bill Gross of PIMCO spoke to Bloomberg TV’s Trish Regan this afternoon and said that he is doubtful of another round of quantitative easing in June, but “if we see some weak employment reports over the next two months, then QE3 is back on.”  He also said that there’s a risk of a double-dip recession “if liquidity disappears.” Gross went on to say that “euro land is a dysfunctional family…more dysfunctional than Democrats and Republicans in Washington, DC.” Gross on whether he’s betting on another round of quantitative easing:  ”I don’t at the moment. I am willing to listen and I did listen intently at the press conference and to prior speeches from Janet Yellin and Mr. Dudley in New York. The big three at the Fed I think have moved closer to the middle in terms of the need for additional QE. They in the market are going to wait for the next eight weeks for two key employment Friday reports between now and then, as well as tomorrow’s GDP number, which I think should be judged in my opinion by nominal growth as opposed to real growth.  The Fed does not target nominal GDP. They target inflation though.

Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Speaks to Bloomberg: Full Transcript

April 25, 2012
Blankfein Bloomberg TV

Bloomberg TV anchor Erik Schatzker spoke with Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) CEO Lloyd Blankfein today.  Blankfein said “shame on us in a way for not anticipating how important” public sentiment would be for maintaining Goldman’s reputation.  Blankfein also said, “I tend to be a little more positive than what I’m hearing from other people…one of the big risks that people have to contemplate is that things go right.”  Blankfein on public opinion of Goldman Sachs:  ”I think the average American probably had no contact and had never heard of Goldman Sachs before three years ago.  Shame on us in a way for not anticipating how important that would be. We’re an institutional business with no consumers.  It turns out, another name for consumers are citizens and taxpayers.  They became important for reasons that are obvious.  They always should have been important, but it wasn’t part of our audience as we thought about it.  Now we will have to develop those muscles a little better than we have. Shame on us.” On whether Goldman is still, in the public’s eyes, the “vampire squid”:  ”That is hyperbole…it possibly is, but we’ll have to do a better job, getting

Heritage Foundation on Oil Prices

April 25, 2012
heritage-foundation-on-oil-prices

Gas prices are on the rise, with no end in sight. The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.85, and many analysts predict gasoline prices could reach record highs this summer. While Americans’ budgets are being squeezed at the pump, the current administration is unilaterally taking steps that would decrease the amount of domestic oil produced in the United States. At least 103 drilling permits are stuck awaiting review by the bureaucrats in Washington. Since President Obama “lifted” his deepwater drilling moratorium in October 2010, not a single new exploratory drilling plan in the Gulf of Mexico has been approved by the administration. To add insult to injury, the administration has also placed a seven-year ban on drilling in coastal waters. The American people and many of their representatives in Congress are calling on this administration to loosen the stranglehold they’ve placed on new energy supplies and to increase domestic exploration. However, instead of offering practical solutions to the rising oil prices, President Obama is ridiculing the conservative plan to increase drilling, asserting, “that’s not a plan; that’s a bumper sticker.” His alternative: still more government spending on “green energy” schemes. Meanwhile, nearly three out of four Americans

Value Investing: Investing for Grown Ups

April 23, 2012
Magnifying glass

Value investors are bargain hunters and many investors describe themselves as such. But who is a value investor? In this paper, we begin by addressing this question, and argue that value investors come in many forms. Some value investors use specific criteria to screen for what they categorize as undervalued stocks and invest in these stocks for the long term. Other value investors believe that bargains are best found in the aftermath of a sell-off, and that the best time to buy a stock is when it is down. Still others adopt a more activist approach, where they buy large stakes in companies that they believe are under valued and mismanaged and push for changes that they believe will unleash this value.Value investing is backed by academic research and also by anecdotal evidence –the success of value investors like Ben Graham and Warren Buffett are part of investment mythology – but it is not for all investors. We will consider what investors need to bring to the table to succeed at value investing. Who is a value investor? In 2011, Morning star, a widely used source of mutual fund information, categorized 2152 equity mutual funds, out of 8277 domestic equity funds, as
