Here is how you can install Chrome extensions on Edge

Updated on

Microsoft only recently came out with the new Edge browser for Windows 10, mobile and macOS. However, like the earlier versions, this also has only a small number of Microsoft-approved extensions. But, the good news is that you can install Chrome extensions on Edge. If you don’t know how to do it, then detailed below is everything you need to know.

New Edge browser: all you need to know

Microsoft’s new Edge browser has ditched its decade-old rendering engine in favor of Chromium. Google’s Chrome is also based on the same Chromium engine. It means the Edge browser can easily access the vast section of extensions that the Chrome web store has to offer.

Though Microsoft does offer some Edge-specific extensions and the number is increasing, it is nowhere near the extensions offered by Chrome. Thus, you can install Chrome extensions on Edge, but for that, you need to take a few extra steps. The overall process is easy and the end result will make your Edge experience much better.

Before we detail the process to install Chrome extensions on Edge, there are a couple of things that you should know. First, if any extension depends on the Google Account functionality, then it may not work in the Edge browser. Second, if any Chrome extension depends on the companion software on the PC, then also it may not work even if you install it.

Another thing that you should know is that Google Chrome color themes, which are available in the Chrome Web Store, do not work with Edge. So, currently only the extensions will work on Edge. Now let’s go through the process to install Chrome extensions on Edge.

How to install Chrome extensions on Edge

Follow the below steps to install Chrome extensions on Edge:

Step 1: You first need to enable Google extension support. To do this launch the browser, then go to Settings > Extensions.

Step 2: At the bottom of the left panel, there will be a button for Allow extensions from other stores. Turn it on.

Step 3: You will get a warning message that Microsoft has not tested the extensions in the Chrome Web Store. Click “Allow” to move forward.

Step 4: Now go to the Chrome Web Store and install the extension you want. You can also search for any extension.

Step 5: Once you get the extension you are looking for, click the Add to Chrome button and then the Add extension to verify.

That’s it! The extension will now install, similar to how they would on Google Chrome.

To view the extensions you have installed, go to Settings > Extensions. Here you will get a list of all the extensions that you have installed from the Microsoft Store. Extensions from Chrome will show up under From other sources section.

To delete any extension that you previously installed, go to the “Extensions” tab. Here you will have all the Chrome extensions sorted by the store you downloaded them from. On selecting any extension, you will get the option to “Remove” it.

How to get the new Edge browser

Microsoft’s new Edge browser comes with Internet Explorer mode for businesses, built-in tracking protection and Collections feature to get images and content from the web. This new browser (as said above) is for the Windows, macOS and mobile users. To get the new Edge browser follow the below steps:

Step 1: Go to Microsoft’s Edge site and download the installer.

Step 2: Run the installer. If you already had the old version of Edge, its logo will change to the new one, on the task bar icon.

Step 3: Launch the Edge browser. You will get the option to import data from Chrome or old Edge or start as new.  You will also have an option to change how the new tabs will look. Additionally, you can sign in via your Microsoft Account to sync favorites, passwords, and more. To disable personalized ads, search, and news from Microsoft tap on the “Next” button.

Now that you have configured the new Edge browser, let’s see the steps to install Edge extensions from Microsoft:

Step 2: From the drop-down menu, select “Extensions.”

Step 3: Now select “Get extensions from Microsoft Store” on the left.

Step 4: Browse for the Edge extensions in the Microsoft Store.

Step 5: If you find something of interest, then all you have to do is click “Get.” The extension will automatically be added to the browser.
