Galaxy Z Flip price, release date, specs and features

Updated on

Samsung is expected to reveal two new device series on Feb. 11, which are the Galaxy Z Flip, the long-rumored clamshell device, and the Galaxy S20 line-up. At this point it’s looking like both devices are the worst-kept secrets at Samsung because many details about them have leaked. In one of the biggest leaks, Germany publication WinFuture has revealed almost everything about the Galaxy Z Flip.

Galaxy Z Flip design and display

Reliable Twitter tipster Evan Blass and WinFuture have obtained the official-looking renders of the foldable phone, showing the device from all angles.

The Z Fold’s design will be different from the Galaxy Fold. It will unfold vertically, similar to Motorola RAZR, rather than horizontally. According to WinFuture, the device features a 6.7-inch foldable ‘Infinity Flex’ OLED display with a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2636 and a 22:9 aspect ratio. It will also support HDR10+.

Samsung is using an “Ultra Thin Glass” display instead of the fragile plastic panel that had botched the launch of Galaxy Fold. The Galaxy Z Fold will have a hole-punch cutout in the top-center of the screen to house the selfie camera. It has a dual camera setup on the back.

The device would also have a second external display. It will be a tiny 1.06-inch Super AMOLED screen to give you quick access to time, notifications, and other details without having to unfold the phone. The device will have a single USB-C port for audio and charging both. There is no sign of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Naver reports that the Galaxy Z Flip will be able to be held at any angle, meaning that it can sit at multiple positions instead of just open and closed, like all the other foldable devices on the market currently. The Korean news outlet said the Z Flip will work in either a laptop or book mode, which increases its versatility even more. Samsung is reportedly targeting women with the clamshell device because it will be easy to place it down while partially open to take a selfie.

WinFuture’s renders show the phone in Black and Purple color options. Samsung could launch it in more colors, though. SamMobile has learned from its sources that the device would launch in Black, Purple, Gold, and Silver colors. However, the color options will vary depending on the market. In South Korea, it would launch in Blue, Pink, and Red colors.

Features and specs

As per the spec sheet shared by WinFuture, the device would run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Plus processor rather than the newest Snapdragon 865. The new Galaxy S20 series would run the Snapdragon 865. The Z Flip would pack 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

It won’t support a microSD card, though. Also missing from the device will be 5G connectivity. The Z Flip will support only 4G LTE connectivity. The device packs a 3,300mAh battery with 15W fast charging. In terms of camera, it would have two 12MP lenses on the back and a 10MP lens on the front for selfies.

The Galaxy Z Flip doesn’t pack the latest and greatest hardware. There is no 5G. Its battery capacity is only decent considering the screen size. The processor is not the most powerful one from Qualcomm. Samsung is keeping all those goodies for the Galaxy S20 series. For the Z Flip, the Korean company is betting on its innovative design and style to attract buyers.

Galaxy Z Flip price

We already knew the Galaxy Z Flip price would be more affordable than Samsung’s first foldable device, the Galaxy Fold. However, we didn’t know to what extent it would be until now.

WinFuture notes that the Galaxy Z Flip will have a starting price of EUR 1,500. An earlier leak from Max Weinbach of XDA Developers had indicated that the device would be priced at EUR 1,400 in Europe.

According to Naver, the Galaxy Z Flip will be priced at 1.6 million won (US$1,374) in Korea. That puts the foldable clamshell device between the price of the upcoming Galaxy S20 and the ultra-expensive Galaxy Fold. According to Naver, the Z’s price is halfway between the Fold and the Galaxy Note 10.

An expert told Naver that between the price and probable relative scarcity of the Galaxy Z Flip, the device will probably sell well, especially since it will be cheaper than the Galaxy Fold. Even the Fold has picked up in popularity despite its price tag of over 2 million won.

Galaxy Z Flip release date

Samsung is set to hold the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 11. WinFuture says the device will go on sale in select markets just a few days later. It would hit the European store shelves on February 14th. In South Korea, Samsung is said to sell the device through SK Telecom, LG Uplus, and KT.
