The cruelty-free foods are particularly popular among the world’s most advanced cities, with restaurants, supermarkets, and food processors offering more vegan options than ever before. Here we take a look at the top 10 most vegan friendly cities in the world.

The ranking was compiled by the online vegan restaurant guide HappyCow. There are more than 8,100 fully vegan restaurants listed on HappyCow, up from just 625 a decade ago. Though the number of vegan options has skyrocketed, the number of pure vegan restaurants in some cities has plateaued due to the growing availability of veg options, noted HappyCow.

HappyCow compiled the list based on three factors – its impression of the overall vegan-friendliness of the city, the number of vegan restaurants in a five-mile radius within the most vegan restaurant-dense area of the city, and the number restaurants offering vegan and veggie menu options in the same five-mile radius.

These are the top 10 most vegan friendly cities in the world:

10- Prague

Prague’s Gothic architecture attracts millions of tourists every year. The city has also been at the forefront of the vegan revolution. It’s an excellent choice for vegan travel. According to HappyCow, Prague has 53 pure vegan restaurants within a five-mile radius. Over the last few years, the number as well as the variety of vegan restaurants has grown rapidly in the city.

9- Tel Aviv

An estimated 5-8% of Israel’s total population is vegan, which is the highest percentage of vegans in the world. So, Tel Aviv making it to the top 10 most vegan friendly cities shouldn’t come as a surprise. The city is home to 40 fully vegan restaurants that offer a combination of Israeli, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisine with some Western influence. Anastasia is one of the most popular vegan restaurants in the city.

8- Bangkok

Bangkok is a new entry in the top ten this year. Most foodies are familiar with the quality and complexity of Thai food. Bangkok is also welcoming of vegan travelers. The bustling city is home to 42 vegan restaurants listed on HappyCow, most of which serve Thai cuisine. Some of the most popular vegan eateries in the city are Nourish Cafe, Veganerie, and Vistro.

7- Portland

Portland is one of the three US cities that appeared in the top 10. Vegan food is an “integral part of Portland’s social fabric,” says HappyCow. A wide variety of vegan eateries can be found all over the city. Within a five-mile radius of the most vegan restaurant-dense area, Portland has 46 fully-vegan restaurants, 26 vegetarian restaurants, and 185 veg-friendly restaurants.

6- Warsaw

The total number of vegan restaurants in the capital of Poland jumped to 50 this year. Most of them are concentrated within just a one-mile radius. The high density of vegan restaurants makes it easy for people to walk from one restaurant to another. The famous vegan burger joint Krowarzywa has been voted the Best Burger in Warsaw for two consecutive years. Krowarzywa has five locations in the city.

5- Toronto

A growing number of Toronto residents have been going vegan for the last several years. The city also hosts the Toronto Veg Food Festival, one of the largest vegetarian events in North America. Some well-known vegan outlets in Toronto are Bloomers, Copper Branch, Globally Local, and Apiecalypse Now. The Good Rebel grocery store sells vegan cheeses, meats, and other vegan foods.

New York has been named the second-most vegan friendly city in the world by HappyCow. You can get vegan alternatives for almost any food item you’d want to eat. A growing number of burger joints offer vegan burgers from Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat. New York has more than 110 fully vegan restaurants in a five-mile radius. Some must-visit places are PS Kitchen, Buddha Bodai, and Blossom Vegan.

London has been named the most vegan friendly city on the planet for the second consecutive year by HappyCow. There is no shortage of vegan delights in London. The city is home to 125 vegan restaurants in a five-mile radius. There are also several supermarkets that sell a whole range of vegan dishes and treats.
