Apple popularized the use of the notch in smartphones with the launch of the iPhone X in 2017. Since then, several OEMs have adopted the notch-like design in their smartphones. Xiaomi, it seems, is now done with such a design and that is why it is making fun of phones that have a notch along with promoting its notchless phone – Xiaomi Mi 9T .
Xiaomi’s notch videos – what they show?
Xiaomi has released three short videos as part of the “Beware The NOTCH” series. As can be understood, the videos promote a new smartphone from Xiaomi that features a full-screen display and a pop-up camera.
The new Xiaomi phone, called Mi 9T, is actually a rebranded Redmi K20. Nevertheless, it still is a decent upper mid-range Android phone. Xiaomi launched the phone last week in international markets.
Talking of Xiaomi’s notch videos, they portray how notches are a distraction and can lead to hilarious outcomes. Further, the videos talk about how to “Cut loose from notches with #Mi9T” and “Share to save yourself from this disaster!” To prove this, the videos show funny incidents at the hairdresser, dentist and at a make-up session.
In the first video, a barber is shown using a trimmer to cut a man’s hair. The barber, however, gets distracted by the notch and accidentally trims more than he should. In the second video, a similar thing happens but between a patient and dentist. The third video features a woman and a make-up artist, who gets distracted by the notch leading to a funny situation.
Loss for Xiaomi
A point to note is that Xiaomi’s notch videos indirectly suggest to users not to buy Xiaomi phones with a notch as well. The Chinese company has come up with several notched phones before, including the popular Poco F1.
Other Xiaomi handsets with a notch that the company currently lists on its India website are Redmi Note 7 Pro, Redmi Note 7S, Redmi Note 7, Redmi 7, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Redmi 6 Pro, Poco F1 and Redmi Y3. Most of these smartphones are also listed on Xiaomi’s main (China) website.
So, with its latest anti-notch videos, Xiaomi seems to suggest that all these smartphones must be avoided. Whether or not it is true only Xiaomi can tell.
Moreover, the Chinese company also recently got a patent for a phone with a protruding notch or reverse notch. This could mean that the company is still experimenting with a notch.
Xiaomi Mi 9T – all you need to know
Xiaomi Mi 9T features a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The handset comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB (or 64GB) of internal storage and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC. At the back, it sports a triple camera set up of 48MP+13MP+8MP configuration. The 48 MP primary sensor supports better low light exposure, while the 13 MP sensor gives users a wider frame and the 8MP telephoto sensor supports 2X zoom facilities.
It has a 20MP pop-up front camera, which eliminates the need for a notch. The handset has a 91.9 percent screen-to-body ratio along with thin bezels on either side. Xiaomi has put a 4,000 mAh battery in the phone and 18W fast charging support. The handset ships with the Android 9.0 Pie operating system.
Xiaomi has also added Game Turbo 2.0 in the handset to boost the gaming experience. The gaming feature reduces touch response times and improves display, sound and network quality.
Other specs include a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 5.0, Hi-Res Audio support and NFC for mobile payments. Talking of the features, the handset boasts an in-display fingerprint sensor, face unlock and a notification light surrounding the pop-up module.
Xiaomi Mi 9T comes in three colors – Carbon Black, Glacier Blue and Flame Red. The handset recently launched in the European market at a starting price of 329 EURO.
Apart from the European markets, the Mi 9T will also launch in Malaysia. Recently, Xiaomi Malaysia confirmed that the handset would launch in the country on June 20. The pricing and availability details of the handset for Malaysia are not known for now.
Xiaomi won’t launch Mi 9T in India. Rather, Indian buyers will get the Redmi K20, which debuted in China last month. Along with the Redmi K20, Xiaomi will also launch the K20 Pro in India sometime next month.
As with all Xiaomi phones, the Mi 9T won’t release in the U.S.
