Activist Insight finds basic materials boom sends activism in Canada and Australia to half-year highs.

Driven by a return to basic materials stocks, the number of companies publicly subjected to activist demands in Canada and Australia have surpassed year-to-date records kept by Activist Insight Online*.
Activists have made public demands at 41 companies headquartered in Australia and 55 companies headquartered in Canada, according to the data. In Australia, that level represents a 41% increase on 2017, which was also the peak. In Canada, that level represents a 53% increase on 2017 and a 22% increase on the peak (in 2015 and 2016).

Of those targeted, 20 Australia-headquartered and 21 Canada-headquartered companies were in the basic materials sector.

So far this year, in addition to a busier basic materials market, both countries have seen a record number of companies publicly subjected to demands for board representation, as shown below.
