Rumors Suggest New Fable Game Release

Updated on

A new report from Eurogamer suggests that a potential new fable game release is in development at Forza Horizon developer Playground Games.

New Fable Game Release

Eurogamer’s sources have stated that the new Fable game release will be a “story and character-focused open-world action RPG,” which will be a first for the series in quite some time. There have been other games with the Fable name, but they’ve been spinoffs of the series such as the multiplayer Fable Legends, or Fable: The Journey which featured motion controls.

Apparently the game is still in the early stages at Playground’s new second studio. While these tumors about the new Fable game release haven’t been confirmed, the company has stated that they’re working on a non-racing open-world game called Project 2. If the new Fable game is truly in development, it would make sense that it would be the mystery title behind Playground’s newest project. Gamespot reached out to a Microsoft representative about the possibility of a new Fable game release, but was told that the company “does not comment on rumor or speculation.”

In an interview Eurogamer, Simon Carter – the co-creator of the Fable series – was not sure how he felt about this news regarding a potential new Fable game release.

“On the one hand it’s great for the UK games industry, and very pleasing that Fable isn’t dead; indeed, it will be lovely to play one as a punter without coming out in hives…On the other hand it is a little curious to get rid of the team that is uniquely expert in making Fable, and then try and make Fable. Fable is a weird game, and a tough one to deconstruct for a new team. That said, the team in question is very talented, and I’m sure they’ll do a fantastic job.”

Big Shoes To Fill

Many feel that it’s a questionable choice to ditch the team that has a ton of experience in developing the titles and give control of a new Fable game release to a studio best known for racing games. While the developers at Playground are no doubt talented, it remains to be seen whether or not they can handle something as monumental as a Fable release. While Forza has a huge following and is incredibly popular, the fan base isn’t quite as opinionated and strong-willed as the critical fans of the Fable series.

Fable was originally developed by Peter Molyneux’s company, Lionhead, and the sister company Big Blue Box. When the game was first announced, Molyneux seemed to be promising the world, suggesting that a ton of new features would be included that had previously never been seen in the world of gaming – at least on that sort of scale. When Fable released, the game was spectacular but not quite as impressive as Molyneux had built the title up to be, so many fans were disappointed. The successors, Fable 2 and Fable 3, were also well received but, again, failed to live up to the hype generated ahead of the release.

Hopefully, with the IP under new management, the team won’t promise something spectacular and then proceed to under deliver. The gaming world is incredibly excited about the prospect of a new Fable game release on current generation systems, however, so we’re cautiously optimistic regarding the outcome. We’ll have to wait and see whether Playground Games can really pull this off – assuming these rumors are even correct in the first place, of course.
