The same official also stated that the President will speak “from the heart” while discussing his administration’s accomplishments and the path of the United States moving forward.
“People will be reminded — in some cases, surprised — but will be reminded of how much President Trump has accomplished in his first year for all Americans,” the official stated.
With the latest Gallup poll reporting Trump’s approval rating at just 36%, it may be difficult for President Trump’s State of the Union address to sway the public opinion regarding his presidency and leadership.
The Agenda
The five main items that President Trump’s State of the Union address will focus on are jobs and the economy, infrastructure, trade, and national security.
According to White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump’s main focus will be the economy. The address is expected to focus on the Republican tax bill that passed in December, as well as the growth of the United States economy and market.
While Trump’s campaign focused on a $1 trillion infrastructure project, details regarding any progress on this front have been slim thus far. News outlet Axios published a document last week, however, that outlined the White House infrastructure proposal. When it comes to immigration, Trump will likely bring up the recent government shutdown that was largely due to the Democrats’ insistence that legislation be approved protecting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. These 700000 undocumented immigrants moved to the country as young children, and are worried about deportation since their protections under the plan may soon be erased. While the White House has put out a framework to address the situation, it does axe several family-based immigration categories as well as the diversity visa lottery.

It’s clear that President Trump’s State of the Union address will be delivered to a tough crowd. With much of the country disapproving of the Commander in Chief’s track record as president, it’s clear that Trump’s strategy will be to double down on what the administration and his supporters view as a success while drawing the attention away from the ongoing investigation into an alleged collaboration with Russia in the process.
With recent reports that Trump has decided not to impose sanctions on Russia due to election meddling, he has once again found himself in the spotlight with some negative publicity. President Trump’s State of the Union address certainly has the ability to change some minds – especially if the official’s statement that many will be “surprised” by his accomplishments is true. The fact remains, however, that Trump is an incredibly controversial president. While many sing his praises, a large portion of the country is opposed to pretty much everything he does. It may be difficult for a well-meaning speech to change those deeply ingrained views.
