Nokia 9 Features, Specs, Price, Release Date: All You Need To Know

Updated on

HMD Global released a wide range of Nokia-branded Android smartphones this year, from the budget Nokia 2 to the premium Nokia 8. There were speculations that the Nokia 9 would be unveiled by the end of 2017, which is not going to happen. However, it could be one of the first Android phones to release in 2018. Let’s check out the rumored Nokia 9 features, specs, possible price, and release date.

Nokia 9 design and display

HMD Global has not revealed anything about the Nokia 9. But the talk about the device picked up a few weeks ago when the Nokia 9 features leaked online. Further details emerged when a Nokia 9 case by HualuBro was listed on Amazon UK. The Nokia 9 is said to sport a 5.5-inch Quad HD OLED display with no side bezels. The front display would be curved on the sides.

There will be slim bezels at the top and bottom, though. It is rumored to have an aspect ratio of 18:9, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 and LG’s V30. It would have a glossy rear panel made out of either glass or metal. The fingerprint sensor will be placed on the back panel. According to the protective cases listed on Amazon, the fingerprint reader is placed below the dual camera system at a safe distance to ensure that users don’t accidentally smear the camera lenses while trying to unlock the device. The LED flash is located next to the rear camera.

Dual camera will be one of the biggest Nokia 9 features

The Amazon listing as well as other leaks have already confirmed a dual camera system on the Nokia 9. But a more concrete proof comes from an Android Oreo beta build. The latest Android Oreo beta for the Nokia 5 contains details about a redesigned Camera app that supports both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses. The existing Nokia phones do not have a telephoto lens.

To recall, the Nokia 8’s secondary camera is a monochrome sensor rather than a telephoto lens. The Nokia 8 (2018) is expected to have the same camera combination. Thanks to the telephoto lens, the Nokia 9’s dual camera would support 2x optical zoom. Other reports claim that the Nokia 9 would sport a 22MP wide-angle lens and a 22MP telephoto lens. The Nokia 8 has two 13MP sensors on the back.

Nokia 9 hardware specs

Just a few days ago, three different variants of the Nokia 9 carrying model numbers TA-1005, TA-1009 and TA-1042 were certified by the Chinese regulators. All the three models have single SIM support. Nokia Power User speculates that some markets could also get the dual SIM version of the handset.

The Nokia 9 is tipped to be available in two storage variants: 64GB and 128GB. There will also be a microSD card slot for further memory expansion. Both the versions are said to have 6GB RAM. It will likely be powered by the older Snapdragon 835 processor rather than the new Snapdragon 845. Samsung’s Galaxy S9 is said to be the first smartphone to use the Snapdragon 845. The Nokia 9 would arrive before the Galaxy S9.

The Nokia 9 is also rumored to have an IP68 rating for water- and dust-resistance. At the bottom of the device is the USB Type-C port, a loudspeaker grill, and 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone would run stock Android Oreo out of the box. HMD Global has promised to offer the stock Android on its phones to differentiate them from rivals that are loaded with bloatware.

Nokia 9 price and release date

Nokia fans will have to wait for the official launch to know the phone’s price. However, early reports indicate that the Nokia 9 would cost CNY4199 in China (approx. $635). It will sit above the current Nokia 8 or the upcoming Nokia 8 (2018) in the premium segment. A few other reports have claimed that it could cost as much as EUR 750 ($886). The Nokia 9 is expected to be sold in the US as well.

The recent Chinese certification suggests that the phone’s launch is imminent. According to Pocket Lint, HMD Global would hold a media event on January 19 where it could unveil the brand new Nokia 9 along with the Nokia 8 (2018) and Nokia 6 (2018). The new phones could hit the store shelves in key markets by the end of January or early February.
