What The Upcoming Galaxy S9 Would Look Like Without The Bottom Bezel

Updated on

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S9 flagship is only a few months away. Rumors about the device have picked up momentum ahead of the unveiling. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus around the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in late February. Recent supply chain leaks indicate that Samsung’s next-gen flagship would borrow a few “tricks” from the iPhone X.

What will the Galaxy S9 borrow from the iPhone X?

It’s unclear exactly what the upcoming Galaxy S9 would borrow from Apple’s anniversary iPhone. It will, in all likelihood, feature a dual camera setup on the back. But that’s not an iPhone X-exclusive feature. Face ID-like 3D facial recognition system is another possibility. However, KGI Securities has told investors that it would take Android vendors a couple of years to replicate Face ID. So, a 3D face detection system seems unlikely on the upcoming Galaxy S9.

Then, what? Will the S9 borrow the iPhone X’s infamous notch? Samsung recently trolled the iPhone X notch in an ad. So, it may not want to add the notch to the Galaxy S9. But the Korean company has been consistently pushing to increase the screen-to-body ratio. It should stick to the Infinity display without opting for the notch. Samsung could ditch the bottom bezel to increase the screen footprint. The slim top bezel would house the iris scanner, front camera, ear speaker, and other sensors.

Will Samsung adopt this design with the upcoming Galaxy S9?

Noted Twitter tipster Ice Universe shared a few photos of the Galaxy S9 without the bottom bezel. It looks absolutely gorgeous, though Samsung may have to raise the display aspect ratio from 18.5:9 to 21:9. It would allow Samsung to increase the screen size without increasing the overall footprint. Only time will tell whether Samsung would adopt this design.

S9 to come with Bluetooth earbuds, vertical dual camera

GizmoChina reports that the Galaxy S9 would feature a vertical dual camera system on the back. It was expected considering Samsung has just added the dual camera on the Note 8. The publication claims the camera system will have a special anti-glare coating that would help eliminate glare and dual images in photos. Samsung’s sister firm Samsung Electro-Mechanics filed the patent for a Broad Band Anti-Reflective Layer only a few days ago.

GizmoChina added that Samsung would also offer AKG-tuned earbuds with Bluetooth functionality with the upcoming Galaxy S9. It sparked speculations that Samsung might be planning to ditch the traditional 3.5mm audio jack. However, GizmoChina clarified that Samsung does not intend to get rid of the headphone jack, a feature that Apple and Google have already dropped from their flagship smartphones.

Multiple reports, including the recently leaked CAD renders, have confirmed that Samsung would revamp the Galaxy S9 rear panel to place the fingerprint reader in a more ergonomic location. Instead of placing it next to the camera, Samsung would put the fingerprint scanner below the camera setup. It means the fingerprint sensor will be near the center of the back panel, where your fingers can easily reach.

The Galaxy S9 won’t be getting the in-display fingerprint sensor, even though Samsung has been working on the technology for years. KGI Securities claims the optical fingerprint solution won’t be ready for introduction before the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung is working to fix the production and security issues with the technology. Of course, we can expect the S9 to have a dedicated Bixby button on the side.

Will there be three Galaxy S9 phones next year?

Another report from Ice Universe claims that Samsung is planning to launch not two but three Galaxy S9 models. The third one will be a mini version of the standard Galaxy S9. The report claims the mini S9 would also have a bezel-less Infinity display, though its screen size would be below 5-inch. In recent years, Samsung has released many compact phones under the mini moniker, but they tend to feature mid-range specs. It would be interesting to see whether the upcoming Galaxy S9 mini would feature the same components as the standard S9.

The S9 would be powered by Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 845 SoC or Samsung’s in-house Exynos 9810 processor depending on the region. Samsung recently unveiled the Exynos 9810 chipset, which is built using the 10nm process, and features gigabit modem with “industry-first 6CA support.” The 6CA support means it would offer download speeds of up to 1.2GB/s.

According to The Investor, the Galaxy S9 production would start in December. The Galaxy S phones traditionally hit the store shelves in March or April. However, the December production timeline indicates that the upcoming Galaxy S9 could arrive sooner than usual. There have been tons of rumors that Samsung is planning to bring forward the S9 release to defend its market share against Apple’s iPhone X.
