No Plans For Single-Player Campaign: PUBG Creator

Updated on

For gamers who have been waiting for the PUBG single player mode, there is bad news – the wait is going to be long, very long. PUBG creator Brendan Greene (AKA PlayerUnknown) has now confirmed that there are no plans yet for the single-player campaign.

No single-player mode for PUBG

The news comes as a disappointment to players, who have been hoping for this functionality, especially after earlier this year, when during a Reddit AMA, Greene expressed interest in exploring the single-player campaign.

However, speaking to GameSpot on Thursday, Greene admitted that they “have no resources. We have no time. We have no plans to add anything like this to the game. No, no single-player is coming to Battlegrounds.”

Explaining why he expressed interest in the mode earlier, Greene said that he has a backstory for PUBG’s island to give the game a more believable and authentic environment, and explain why people would come to such an island. “Because of the lore of the island, there was an idea that I had for what I thought would be a pretty cool single-player [mode], and even co-op single-player campaign,” Greene told GameSpot.

That idea now has been put to rest it seems, and the reason, as Greene said, is “no time, no resources.” Greene, however, has not completely killed the idea, saying the campaign could come “some day.”

Further, Greene also admitted that he is in favor of a cross-play between the PC and Xbox One as the experience on both the platforms will be the same. Beyond that, Greene gave no hint on when and how this could be possible.

“It’s something we’re looking into, but right now we don’t have anything to say about it. But we would like to see it happen. But how we do that requires a bit of work,” he told.

Has PUBG’s success changed Greene

PlayerUnknown’s: Battlegrounds (affectionately known as PUBG) is a battle royale game by Bluehole Studio. In the game, up to 100 inappropriately dressed people parachute onto an 8km square island, and fight until the last one remains. Since its launch in March, the game has been a viral hit, becoming the most-played game of all time on Steam.

Though the game is still incomplete, it has already sold over 13 million copies. The number is expected to grow further as the Xbox version of the game has still to come.  Despite the games phenomenal success, Greene says his life “hasn’t changed” much, except that he is financially secure now.

“I’m comfortable now in that I don’t have to worry about where my next meal is coming from, which is nice,” Greene told GameSpot. “My daughter doesn’t need to worry now. I can provide for her. Day to day, my life hasn’t changed much.” PUBG creator said that he wears the same clothes and does not like to spend money on extravagant things.

Greene admitted that he does “have a nice collection of Prada sunglasses” and will occasionally “get a bottle of wine,” but except for that his life is the same. For Greene, PUBG is not the only source of income as his Battle Royale mode has also been licensed by the game H1Z1.
