Google Pixel 2 XL Leak: Evan Blass Reveals Phone On Twitter [PHOTOS]

Updated on

A major Google Pixel 2 XL leak has emerged ahead of the release of the next gen smartphone range. The notorious Evan Blass has posted images on Twitter of what he claims pictures the Google Pixel 2 XL. These clear photographs mostly display the front of the unit, indicating a display with minimal bezels that is very much in line with the smartphone zeitgeist.

Sleek design

This larger version of the Google Pixel 2 range is pictured with a black bezel, and the casing of the handset also visible in some images. There is a distinct similarity between this smartphone and the existing Galaxy S8, with the rounded corners and thin bezels on both sides of the unit particularly noticeable.

The Google Pixel 2 XL leak also reveals that there will be slightly thicker bezels contained at the top and bottom of the device, with the upper edge of the unit also housing the speaker and selfie-capturing camera. It seems that Google has placed the speaker grille on the bottom of the device, with the microphone required to host phone calls also located adjacently to this.

Major leak

This can be considered a major breakthrough ahead of the actual unveiling event, as previous leaked pictures have only displayed the reverse of the handset. Instead, this latest Google Pixel 2 XL leak reveals a smartphone with an extremely capable display, based on the strong depth of field included in the wallpaper that is visible in these latest images. Already analysts are speculating that Google will be pushing a wide colour gamut for the display of the handsets.

With the larger smartphone in the Pixel 2 range expected to be manufactured by LG, it is perhaps not surprising that there is a similarity in design with the LG G6. This can be considered quite solid information now, as the source of this leak is particularly credible, and we can certainly give significant credence to these leaked images.

Smartphone push

Google will be staking a huge amount of hope in the Pixel 2 range, with the smartphone series intended to establish the mega-corporation as a major player in the technology market. The original Google Pixel and Pixel XL were well-received in terms of their critical reception, but still Google can be considered a relatively marginal player in the mobile niche.

Although this Google Pixel 2 XL leaks suggest that the premium smartphone will benefit from a major design change, it is likely that the more affordable Pixel 2 will be rather similar to last year’s release. Clearly considering the price tag for the Pixel 2 XL, Google has decided that it is of paramount importance to improve the physical design of the unit, which has been somewhat criticized in the previous Google Pixel generation. Naturally, appearance is everything in a marketplace dominated by Apple and its notorious focus on aesthetics.

Aside from the design of this next generation smartphone, it is also anticipated that the Google Pixel 2 XL will feature an outstanding display. Its six-inch screen will definitely possess Quad HD resolution, but recent reports have suggested that Google will even push the boat out further and ensure that it is capable of displaying 2,880 x 1,440 pixels.

Features

Undoubtedly the standout feature of the Google Pixel 2 series will be the Active Edge functionality, expected to migrate from the HTC U11 release. This function will enable users to squeeze the sides of the Pixel 2 smartphone in order to access certain software.

However, there remains some debate over whether this will ultimately appear in both models in the series. With HTC involved in the manufacturing of the smaller Google Pixel 2, it is possible that the Pixel 2 XL will not be armed with the Active Edge feature. This would be rather disappointing considering that its price tag will be $200 more than the standard Pixel 2, and there will certainly be pressure on Google to implement Active Edge in the Pixel 2 XL to some degree.

Nonetheless, this Google Pixel 2 XL leak has certainly given us a strong insight into the makeup of this to phone ahead of its October 4 unveiling.
