Latest OnePlus 5 Software Update Improves Camera, Fixes Bugs

Updated on

OnePlus 5 has one of the best smartphone cameras out there. At just $479, the phone gives you no big reason to complain about. The Chinese smartphone vendor knows that consumers are obsessed with their photos. They want their pictures to look as good as possible. That’s why OnePlus has been trying to further improve the camera on its latest flagship. The company has pushed out a new OnePlus 5 software update that enhances the camera quality, besides fixing a few bugs.

The OnePlus 5 software update improves low-light photography

The Chinese company said in a OnePlus forum thread that the OxygenOS version 4.5.10 had been rolled out over the air. The rollout would be incremental, meaning only some users have received the update so far. Others will get it in the next few days. The new OnePlus 5 software update does not bring any new features. Instead, it focuses on fixing bugs and improving the camera performance.

The changelog does not mention whether it fixes the jelly scrolling effect that many users have been complaining about for weeks. The OnePlus 5 software update reduces noise during low-light photography. The smartphone performs pretty well when there is ample of light. It also brings improved camera stability as well as texture improvements when recording videos at 60 frames per second.

OnePlus has also fixed a bug that caused accidental touches after users hang up from a call. The company has fixed the scrolling issue for the Google Play Music. A bug related to the new font added to the OnePlus 5 has also been fixed. OnePlus also claims to have improved WiFi stability, though it didn’t specify what was improved. Other fixes include the clarity issue of videos taken by the SnapShot app. If you use the SnapShot, you should be able to notice the difference after the update.

OnePlus offers 10% discount to students on OnePlus 5

Meanwhile, OnePlus has announced a new student discount program to lure young buyers. The Chinese vendor said in a post that its phones are incredibly popular among students. Under the new Student Program, OnePlus offers up to 10% discount on OnePlus 5 if you could prove that you are a student. It’s not the first time a company is offering its products to students at a discounted rate. Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, and other have been doing it for years.

The student offer is valid in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Austria, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Croatia. Students in Asian countries including two of OnePlus’s largest markets – China and India –  are not eligible for the offer. People looking to avail the offer will also need to have a Student Beans account.

You can register for a new account on Student Beans if you have a valid .EDU email address. The company says you cannot purchase more than one OnePlus 5 using the 10% discount coupon. If you add more than one phone to your cart during the checkout, the coupon becomes invalid. Visit the company’s Student Program landing page to avail the offer. The coupon is valid only for a month. Make sure to place your order within a month of generating the coupon code.

OnePlus phones have always offered great value

OnePlus 5 is one of the most powerful smartphones out there. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 SoC and 6GB RAM, the phone competes with the iPhone 7 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8. OnePlus has optimized its software to deliver the maximum performance. The company also offers another version with 8GB RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. The 6GB RAM model packs 64GB internal storage.

The phone sports a 5.5-inch OLED display with Full HD 1080p resolution, though it lacks a Samsung Galaxy S8-like edge-to-edge display. The OnePlus 5 is powered by a 3,300mAh battery with Dash Charge technology. Just like iPhone 7 Plus, it has a dual-camera system on the back. It includes a 20-megapixel sensor with an f/2.6 aperture and a 16-megapixel lens with an f/1.7 aperture.

The OnePlus 5 camera offers 1.6x optical zoom, dual LED flash, and phase detection autofocus. The device also has a 16-megapixel front camera for selfies.

OnePlus 5 has a new competitor in the form of Nokia 8

OnePlus has built a loyal fan base across the globe by offering premium specifications at mid-range prices. The OnePlus 5 costs only half as much as Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 8, which has a price tag of $930.

The smartphone market has become fiercely competitive, even in the premium segment. OnePlus 5 will face tough competition in the coming weeks from HMD Global’s latest offering Nokia 8. Both the OnePlus 5 and Nokia 8 have similar specs. They both have a dual camera setup, and run the Snapdragon 835 chipset. However, Nokia still has a brand appeal in several major markets. The Nokia 8 also has an advanced OZO Audio surround sound technology and a Bothie camera feature.
